Dear fellow Rotarians and friends,
Next Sunday, October 24th, is World Polio Day as determined by the UN. Rotarians around the world are planning events in celebration of this day. In San Francisco, approximately 2,000 people are expected to walk the Golden Gate Bridge along with President Ray. A lighting of the Ferry Terminal with END POLIO NOW is planned for the evening. For the week leading up to this event [i.e., Monday 10/18 through Sunday 10/24], The Rotary Foundation will be offering 2 for 1 recognition credit for every contribution of US$100 or more made to polio on-line. The strategy is to encourage Rotarians to experience R.I.'s on-line giving application in the hopes that they will find it simple and easy and come back to it again and again. On-line contribution processing is much less expensive than processing checks through the bank lockbox. The opportunity is open to all Rotarians worldwide for one week. To make your donation, visit www.rotary.org/contribute. If you have questions, see the Frequently Asked Questions or ask our Foundation Chair Jim Tompsett or me.
Regretfully, Secretary Barbara has indicated that she is ending her taking and publishing meeting notes. I want to thank her for the terrific job she has done - many Rotarians have told me how much they enjoy reading her weekly reflections. Unfortunately, that also means the end of the weekly newsletter, as I really don't want the club newsletter to become "my" newsletter, unless another Rotarian steps up to the plate and takes over from Barbara... Of course, occasional contributions, such as Laurie's recent ones, are always welcome from any of you, too. I'll continue to publish the newsletter any week I receive content from club members.
Some of you may have noticed a mystery calendar entry in the Club's Membership Directory for Tuesday, November 23:
Special - Rotary Thanksgiving Dinner.
I'm happy to let you know that Laurie and I have made arrangements for this dinner to be held at the Caledonia Village Inn private party room.
We will have cash-bar cocktail hour from 5 to 6 pm, followed by buffet dinner consisting of carved turkey breast, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry, vegetables, tossed salad, Waldorf salad, bread/butter, pumpkin pie, coffee/tea/decaf.
As Laurie said so aptly, YUM!!! The cost per person is $20 which includes tax and gratuity.
Look for a sign-up sheet in the near future.
(NOTE: due to the limited seating at the private upstairs space, this dinner is intended for "just us".
But, we figured you'll have plenty of family events already that week! :-)
I'm looking forward to seeing you all at this Tuesday's Membership dinner; thanks to Tom's efforts, and all of you who suggested and contacted prospective members, this is going to be another impressive evening!
"Building communities, bridging continents" comes in many forms, and takes many hands, many brains, many Rotarians!

| Reflections: |
Our meeting of October 12 featured a visit from District Governor Jeff Krans and ADG Walt Springer. We sang "God Bless America", had an invocation from Reverend Bert Croop and two resounding verses of "R-O-T-A-R-Y" led by Tim Dickinson. Other guests included our exchange student Sandra , past Avon Rotary president Paul Lathan, now of Florida; and our three about-to-be-inducted members, Kim Hines, Mark Morrow, and Brett Schrader. We celebrated October birthdays, including Doug Reed, currently on leave-of-absence; Rotary anniversaries especially 8-year memberships for President Hans Koomen and Club Treasurer Kelly Cole; and 62 years of marriage for Ted Coyne. (We don't know if Dorothy celebrates that, or not, as she was not present to inform us.) Thanks to Ed Kime, who is passing the bucket tonight for fines and celebratory contributions. Steve Irwin was sorry to have missed the Eastern Cities Dinner last week, while he was visiting his son and family in Virginia. President Hans enjoyed some time at Honeoye Lake. Jerry Dougherty celebrated a beautiful weekend for the Genesee Valley Hunt. As he related the story, the Vonglises were a bit surprised to find on their flight to Florida that they might be sharing the Florida condo with several Sisters of Saint Joseph, friends of Jerry and Kim. Kelly celebrated a week in Hawaii with Jan and cousin Mary Jo and her husband, enjoying snorkeling, helicopter ride, lots of other activities and splendid surroundings. It turns out that Jerry Dougherty is actually Avon's "squirrel relocation manager". Ask him about that, if you don't know. Mark Evans had a memorial service for family members at Forest Lawn Chapel in Buffalo, and was happy that both his daughters were able to attend. Kevin Tompsett participated in his law firm's partners' retreat in Washington, at the 4 Seasons Hotel, and had quite a time locating an appropriate pair of socks. After being laundered once, apparently these $45 socks will now fit Nolan. Joe Callahan celebrated a three-week 7000-mile trip through some national parks, and no rain. SOME ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR CLUB MEMBERS:
Mark Evans used his three-minute allotment to suggest ways for each club member to generate the $250 - $300 which is needed to gross the amount of income we hope for at the November 13 auction. Jim Tompsett reminds us that Rotary Foundation month is November; the District Brunch meeting will be November 14 at Belhurst Castle in Geneva.
MC Steve Stephenson and DG Jeff Krans inducted our three new members:
Our closing song was "When You're Smiling" -- surely, that was new member Mark Morrow smiling as winner of the 50 / 50.
Your club secretary,
