Avon Rotary Newsletter

President's Message

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends.

Don't you think pictures make a publication ever so much more fun to look at? I wish I had the time (not to mention the skills!) to take pictures during our meetings, but I don't. So I can only include pictures in this newsletter if members (that is, you!) send them to me, preferably by Saturday night. And remember, it's for web publication, not print, so they don't have to be super high quality. And no doubt at least half of you bring a cell phone to the meeting, and most of those have a built-in camera. So, go to it!

Many of our members have been Club President at one time or another, and some of you even more than once. There is a lot of proven leadership ability in our club, and therefore it's appropriate that I pass on the request I just received from our District Governor, Jeff Krans:

This is a reminder about the District Governor Informational Seminar being held September 15th at "The Nines", Livingston Country Club, in Geneseo. Also, remember that DG applications are due to Scott Healy, Chair of the Nominating Committee, by October 22nd.

While the qualifications to serve as District Governor are listed in our District Policies and Procedures, leaders in our district are aware that more information would be valuable to individuals considering being nominated by their clubs at some future date. Accordingly, we have scheduled this informational seminar as an informal way to add detailed information about what being a district governor entails.

Individuals attending the seminar should not think that others will assume they are applying this year for the position: we encourage clubs with potential candidates to send any member willing to gather information to be shared with the clubs and prospective DG candidates, whether or not they are applying this year.

Please email RSVPs to Gaven Hurley.

Thank you,

Governor Jeff

This week Mark Evans will be kicking off our next big thing, the 43rd Annual Avon Rotary Auction! Let's all do what we can to make it bigger and better than ever. Be on the look-out for high-quality items, and for ways of expanding our scope beyond Avon and its immediate environs, both in terms of merchandise and in terms of publicity and bringing in attendees.

Have you thought about ways we can be "building communities, bridging continents"?

President Hans Koomen

Looking back on...

Tue 8/31 Regular Meeting
Program: Tom Ippolito on his 2007 vacation in Italy and Sicily
Attendance:

Absentees were not reported.

President Hans encourages all who missed a meeting to call another absentee and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line list of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Barbara about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.

Reflections:

Our final August meeting was on the 31st, with Bill Shaw leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Pastor Dan Jones offering a prayer, including thankfulness for the freedoms we enjoy, and "America", our anthem. Songleader Helen Zamboni announced "Bye, Bye Blackbird" (maybe she is hoping those crows will depart from our neighborhood) and two rounds of our "R O T A R Y" song.

Our guests included prospective members Kim Hines and Justin Matusak -- welcome, both!! and guests Brett Schneider and Tami Clark. Warm welcome to Jim Gaffney, our long-time long-ago Club treasurer and now an honorary member.

Celebrations included:

  • Jamie Shoemaker, a surprise 40th birthday party for his wife, he was happy to say, was a real surprise for her. Bob's Brother's Band helped celebrate and a big cheesecake birthday cake from Cheesy Eddie's helped, too.
  • Bob French celebrated some activity on the tennis court this morning, claiming that Bill Shaw feigned a foot injury to explain a loss. He also celebrated returning to the area from an over-watery experience on the canal, and returning with the boat intact, this time.
  • Bill Shaw commented on Bob's experiences with the boat: last year, they ran out of water, this year, too much.
  • Mark Evans: the replacement of his '99 Dodge Caravan with a 2005-vintage van.
  • Barb McCormick: a family vacation in the Adirondacks, enjoying some white water rafting on Moose River, and she's especially happy about her 10th year cancer-free.
  • Steve Stephenson: that Carl Lutz is present at the meeting instead of at his pool.
  • Kelly Cole enjoyed his brother Marty and his wife here and at the Islands for a week. Announcement: Barb Cole is now able to use e-mail!
  • Bert Croop celebrated his 64th wedding anniversary with Betty, enjoying a dinner at Fratelli's with their son, and able to use the gift certificate from the Club which he earned for presenting the best program last year.
  • Helen Zamboni: her last bike tour this year.
  • Bruce Burritt: a surprise 25th wedding anniversary for his son, and being able to discard his cane now, after his second hip replacement in March.
  • Jerry Dougherty announced that he was the recipient of Barb Cole's first e-mail. Or, perhaps just that "his people" received it.
  • Tom Ippolito thanked Kelly for his help in presenting tonight's program, and described a great weekend hosting U.S. Navy buddies from many years ago.
  • Chris Steger: his daughter's graduation party.
  • Marci Cameron:her older grandson, now five years old, starting school.

Announcements:

  • President Hans circulated a note from former Avon Rotarian Hoyt Mason, now of Lakeland, Florida.
  • Julie Carney reminds all: order your dinner on-line. And, a request to sign up to spend some time with our exchange student, Sandra Holzer (clearance needed for her to be with folks other than her assigned host families).
  • The Avon Chamber of Commerce will have its monthly breakfast meeting next Tuesday, September 7, here at Peppermints, 7:30 a.m. The presenter will be discussing options for a new life for the Park Theatre. Welcome, all.

Our program was Tom Ippolito's trip to Sicily and a very enjoyable presentation it was, thanks, Tom.

Big winner of the 50 / 50 was Ed Kime, with $21 pocketed.

Correction: Kelly Cole was indeed among those attending the August 24 meeting. Sorry, Kelly, your name was not "x'd" by the Front Desk committee. Also, Kelly was thanking the Vonglis committee for help in putting away corn booth items. ( He must have been speaking too rapidly for the Secretary's hearing at that meeting.)

Your club secretary, Barbara Herman
