President's Message

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends.

Check off another American experience for that "dern furriner", the Prez Man: riding in the back of a pick-up truck, to the four corners of the world (err, Avon), picking up Corn Festival signs, about the only thing missing from the scene was him nonchalantly holding a cold Bud. But, then again, 7:30 on a Sunday morning... And, a Bud... :-)

Seriously, though, watching the green beauty all around me as we cruised, I couldn't help but reflect on how much I've come to like this beautiful village, and the community and many friendships I've gained since I joined Rotary.

And, once again, I realized how much "building community" depends on "working together in service to others." And working together we sure did, tirelessly, this weekend and all the weeks leading up to it, in order to put on yet another wonderful and successful Corn Festival. Besides our inspiring and effective Cornfest Chair Kirk, there are simply too many people to thank by name. Rotarians, family members, friends, a big thank you to all of you, and congratulations on the terrific job you did. Our Rotary community and our Avon community are the better for it!

(If my first paragraph surprised you, remember that what is common and ordinary to you may be quite unsual and "an experience" for a member of another culture. Keep that in mind when you meet our brand-new exchange student, Sandra Holzer, freshly arrived from Austria this past Thursday. If you see that deer-in-the-headlight look, try again, with different words! Be sure to make your aquaintance, by the way - she's a delightful girl! And hopefully you'll be hearing from her regularly in this medium.)

Speaking of community, this Tuesday we'll have the privilege of visiting another wonderful community, the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp for handicapped kids. Instead of our regular meeting we will have a picnic at the camp (thanks, Chef Ernie!), and an opportunity to meet many of the campers and camp staff. Our club is proud to be a significant contributor to this very worthwhile cause. I encourage especially our many new members to come out and join - it's an inspiring experience! (I know it's only 19 ernie miles, but let's try to carpool and make it a green visit also. Meet at 5 pm at New Way if you'd like to share rides.)

Watch for an update in next week's newsletter on our international project to "build communities, bridge continents"!

President Hans Koomen

Looking back on...

Tue 8/10 Regular Meeting
Program: Youth Exchange in Argentina, by Catherine Lloyd (1st attempt)
Attendance:

Present were Callahna, Cameron, Carney Cole H. and K., Coyne, E, Croop, Csapo, Dougherty, Evans, Harper, Hayes, Henehan, Herman, House, Iler, Ippolito, Irwin, Kime both E and L, Koomen, Lutz, McCormick, Ryan, Sawicki, Shoemaker, Steger, Tompsett both J and K, Vanderbilt, Vonglis both L and T, Williams, Zamboni.

President Hans encourages all who missed a meeting to call another absentee and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line list of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Barbara about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.

Reflections:

Songleaders Tom Ippolito and Bob House led us in "America", and a prayer offered by Bert Croop led to the "Wiffenpoof Song". Were there any Yalies among us for that?

We welcomed guests First Lady Trisha Koomen, Ginny House, Reverend Kim Hines, and exchange student Catherine Lloyd with parents Bill and Meg and brother Coyne.

Long-time-no-see Hal Cole willingly paid a fine for his absence. We also greeted the T-Shirt Delivery Service Director Karen Vanderbilt and Maggie and Ella -- and many many thanks for all their work on the tees.

Celebrations included:

  • Carl Lutz: his wife Mandy in the top 15% of a triathlon, of a total of 730 + women.
  • Tom Ippolito: anticipating the arrival of three U.S. Navy friends, from Adak days, here for four days of touring and friendship;
  • Jerry Dougherty: the purchase, with Jim Tompsett, of a lamb from 4-H'ers at the Hemlock Fair, and a great golf tournament on Saturday.
  • Helen Zamboni, two days of bike touring for M.S., 105 and 51 miles respectively, and her team once again the top fundraisers. Pay up, all you Rotarians, who pledged to support this.
  • Laurie Vonglis, proudly displaying the 2010 Corn Fest program, now being distributed.
  • Diana Williams, going to spend a weekend with her son, at Camp Lejeune on a break from his deployment assignment.
  • Mark Evans, for the July 21 unveiling at the Frances Folsom Cleveland Buffalo site, and for the successful production of the national convention of the American Political Items Collectors in Buffalo. Gladys Iler was proud to celebrate the first event with Mark, and having her photo taken with George Cleveland.
  • Margo Harper, for good results at a stress test.
  • Tom Vonglis, celebrating the same golf tournament, with Kelly Cole, Chris Steger and someone named Tompsett. Bob House celebrated the same event. Steve Irwin was able to offer a half-celebration of that tournament, with Dr. Bob Hayes.
  • Jim Tompsett, reviewing the results of that tournament, found himself amazed at "the people who got through high school and are bad at math".
  • Barbara Herman celebrated the first-ever (for our club) documentation of an online makeup, by Carl Lutz. This is an easy way to keep up your attendance, and help the club's attendance scores.

And some fines:

  • Chris Steger paid a fine for late arrival tonight.
  • Joe Callahan paid a fine for watching your club secretary struggle with moving the lectern from Peppermints to the display window at the APHS last week. He claimed he wondered why I was moving Rotary supplies out of Peppermints. Others seemed to think he liked watching "a strong independent woman". Hummmph.
  • Hal Cole called on past president Jerry Dougherty to assess his fine (as noted above) for absences. He also thanked Catherine Lloyd profusely for translation help dealing with a Dominican Republic customer for King Cole Beans and a substantial order of pink beans.

Finally, some annoucements for the club members:

  • Julie Carney reminds us that exchange student Sandra Holzer arrives Thursday, 7:00 p.m.+ / - at the Rochester airport, and asks other Rotarians to help greet her.
  • Dr. Hayes still has plenty of 50 / 50 raffle tickets for the Corn Fest.
  • Kirk Vanderbilt reviewed the final sign-up for Corn Fest assignments, and will be very happy to see the rest of you helping clean up, starting at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday. The post-fest picnic at the Coles' house is a BYO - plus - a-dish-to-share.
  • Mark Evans has booked the auctioneer for the Club auction, November 13, and touts the www.auctionzip.com site.
  • Kelly Cole announces there will be a pitching contest at the post-fest picnic, aimed at the Wesleyan Church, since Pastor Dan will never know about it. Also, free parking at the church, thanks to Dan's offer.
  • Laurie Vonglis reminds us: next Tuesday, August 17, our official meeting will be at Camp Sam Wood. Carpooling encouraged. Dinner, prepared by Ernie Wiard, $10 per.
  • Kevin Tompsett reported that our club donation to the Wounded Warriors has already provided payoff: their participation in the Genesee Valley Regatta on September 18 will feature the Rotary logo on their t-shirts.

Due to technical difficulties beyond her control, Catherine Lloyd was unable to make her presentation tonight; however, an excellent Q & A period with Catherine provided some highlights of her Argentine experience. We'll all look forward to her presentation during her December period home from college.

We all learned a new phrase from our prez (refering to the Lloyd's slow internet connection): we're in the "boonsticks". "Dern furriners", he exclaimed.

Finally, the big winner of the 50/50 was Corn Fest chair Kirk. Well deserved windfall!

Your club secretary, Barbara Herman

Looking forward to...
