Dear fellow Rotarians and friends.
I want to start by congratulating Laurie, Barb and Ben for an outstanding job on the Rotary display in the windows of the Avon Preservation & Historical Society on Genesee Street. If you haven't already, make sure you take some time to see it!
This week, of course, a lot of us are busy with the final preparations for the Corn Festival this Saturday. I wish us all another fantastic day. May the weather be great, the spirits and fun even greater, and the inevitable problems minor!
Do leave some room in your thoughts and calendar this week for Youth Exchange - this is an important week! First of all, returning Exchange Student Catherine Lloyd will be regaling us this Tuesday on her experiences in Argentina this past year. Most of you will have enjoyed reading Catherine's blog; she's a great writer, and will no doubt do a great job on her presentation also.
Secondly, this Wednesday is the District Welcome Home dinner in Canandaigua for all the returning exchange students in the District. If you're interested in youth exchange but never had the pleasure of attending one of these, I can heartily recommend it. It's just amazing to see the wealth of challenges, excitement and growth that these 30+ young adults have experienced. And if you know of any Avon students that might be entertaining the idea of going on an exchange next year, take them along! As Catherine said in her blog, "I have met literally hundreds of exchange students and never have I met one that regretted going on an exchange. But what I have found is a huge amount of adults, and even kids my age, that tell me they wish they had done something like this."
Last but not least, this Thursday our inbound exchange student, Sandra Holzer, will be arriving from Austria. If you'd like to help give her a warm welcome, come meet her at the airport at 7:13 pm!
What with the Corn Festival and these Youth Exchange events, we sure are "building communities, bridging continents"!

| Reflections: |
We opened our August 3 meeting with a rousing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and a blessing from Pastor Dan Jones. Then Bruce Burritt led us in "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" -- and the corn is nearly "as high as an elephant's eye", as all us locals are enjoying local produce this August. Our guests this week include Louise Wadsworth and Gregg O'Connell -- more, later -- and John McClurg, enjoying a make-up from his Perry Club. And our faithful and hard-working Interact-er Danielle Mc Bride was with us. It was great to see Margo Harper and Sue O'Hearn in the balcony seating area. August birthday boy Bill Shaw was serenaded, but there were no August Rotary membership anniversaries to celebrate. However, wedding anniversary celebrants this month include Carmine Simone, Bob House, Wayne Warriner, BOTH Tom and Laurie Vonglis, Jamie Shoemaker, Bert Croop, Rob Coyne and Tim Dickinson. Thanks to Ed Kime for collecting contributions from these folks. The fortunate high bidder for the No Fine button this month is Jim Tompsett, paying $ 10 to avoid penalties in August ! Celebrations include:
Announcements:
An excellent presentation followed, and thanks to Carl Lutz for arranging it. Louise Wadsworth, owner of the former Pictures and Presents shop in Geneseo, an originator of the Geneseo Summer Festival, and currently the director of the County's Alliance for Business Growth, with Gregg O'Connell, a community developer with many years of experience in Brooklyn areas and currently redeveloping Mt. Morris's Main Street. Their discussion contained many ideas and examples on downtown-area revitalization. Gregg's commitment to Livingston includes board presences for Bank of Castile, American Rock Salt, Sweeteners Plus, and others. His attention to Mount Morris has involved purchasing of a number of buildings, gutting many, inviting a variety of retail businesses, re-facing many buildings, and targeting a mix of arts, antiques and ethnic foods, emphasizing that any development project must include arts. He discussed the absolute need for a good tax-abatement program. He has concentrated on "buy local, hire local" in his developments. Some important lease agreements included requiring stores be lighted at night, retailers agreeing on one night per week they would all stay open, and periodic updates of window displays. The net result will be cleaner, safer communities. Many thanks for this thoughtful presentation -- lots of discussion with him and Louse followed. Our closing song was "Who's Sorry Now?" -- but it wasn't Julie Carney, winner of the 50 /50 payout of $30.00. Th-th-th-that's all for now, folks,
Your club secretary,
Barbara Herman |
The Avon Rotary calendar is also available at http://www.avonrotary.org/calendar.php.
As you may have noticed, Club photographer Mark has been distracted by his duties as chair of an upcoming trade convention [undoubtedly also another great opportunity for his infamous brushes with greatness! :-)]. If you happen to have taken, or will be taking, photos at our meetings and would like to share them with the Club, please email them to Laurie or me so we can upload them to our gallery.
Another reminder: please don't forget to order your meal for our next meeting. I've tried to make it as easy as possible: just go to our meals web page, click on Current Menu, and click on the "my choice" (or, better yet, "my healthy choice") link next to your preferred meal to place your order.
Please submit your favorite sayings, noteworthy
events, etc, and we'll gladly include it here.
