President's Message

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends.

I hope this finds you all well and happy, enjoying a wonderful summer. We're off to a great start of another exciting Rotary year, and it's high time we celebrate that! I hope to see many of you poolside, this Tuesday at Ted and Dorothy's. For some of you 'poolside' might even mean 'inside the pool'! Hopefully with all the rain last Tuesday we're in for some sunshine this Tuesday.

For the second time I passed around a sign-up sheet for volunteers interested in being on a task force to define and execute on an international, hands-on service project, and several more people joined. If you didn't get the chance to put your name on the list, but wish you had, just send me an email and you're on. The task force will have its first meeting in about a month. In the meantime, one thing you can do is to start thinking what type of project would excite you the most: food, water, energy, housing, clothing, medical, education, ... ?

During our change-over dinner, talking about international service, District Governor Jeff Krans referred to the following saying:

"You educate a boy, you benefit that individual. You educate a girl, you benefit that community."
which met with many signs of agreement. DG Krans heard this quote at the Governor's Training Week in California a few months ago from Deepa Willingham, President of PACE Universal ("Promise of Assurance to Children Everywhere"). DG Krans and I invite you to take a look at what this organization is doing, and see if this is an area about which you think our club could get enthusiastic. (Yes, I'm looking for enthusiasm, excitement, thrill; aside from the fact that we want to have fun doing whatever it is we're doing, it needs those qualities to be sustainable!) If this doesn't tickle your fancy, perhaps it can help you focus on what might.

Isn't great to be a Rotarian and help "building communities, bridging continents"!

President Hans Koomen

Looking back on...

Tue 7/13 Regular Meeting
Program: Assembly, Corn Fest Prep
Attendance:

Absentees were not reported.

President Hans encourages all who missed a meeting to call another absentee and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line list of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Barb about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.

Reflections:

Let's all commend our prez, Hans, for having the new club directory in our hands so quickly after the start of his presidential year! That's quite an accomplishment. (One minor note, though: if you fax anything to Bill Wall, it will wind up in Wayne Warriner's fax machine. [Not likely to be much of a problem, though: the misprint has been in the past four directories... HK])

Our meeting of July 13 was very nearly rained out. But those who braved the downpours were rewarded with an excellent meeting. We started with Karl Sawicki leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Rev. Bert Croop offering the blessing. Intrepid songleaders Bruce Burritt and Tom Ippolito helped "Take Me Out to the Ball Game".

Lots of celebrations this week:

  • Laurie Vonglis celebrated a 10-day vacation in the mountains; I guess she had Tom along. She celebrated, regardless.
  • Kelly Cole celebrated his daughter Erin's start of gainful employment in Buffalo.
  • Margo Harper celebrated her most recent surgery July 12 -- we all hope this one "works", Margo. She thanks Julie Carney for "doing" her granddaughter's graduation party. And, some wonderful -- we hear -- fireworks over the July 4 weekend.
  • Jerry Dougherty celebrated the Conesus Lake fireworks -- a big expense, footed by lake property owners -- and Camp Good Days and Special Times receives 10% of the expenditure.
  • Hans celebrated a couple of events: 1) Netherlands coming "this close" to a total win of the World Cup competition, reportedly watched by nearly one billion people, and 2) son Peter launching another web biz service for businesses. Hope I got the address correct: www.optimizely.com.
  • Tom Vonglis admitted to being on that vacation with Laurie and celebrated that, plus getting garage walls up at the Inlet property, and winning a golf tournament. There was some complicated story about getting a free dinner out of a coupon Jerry Dougherty had purchased about twenty years ago -- was that it, Tom?
  • Bill Wall celebrated his daughter's new job, hoping it leads her to relocate out of his house.
  • Jerry celebrated Margo's fantastic fireworks -- see above!! And Margo thanks Kirk for passing along his "Perfect Attendance" pin to her as a token of what she would have earned, but for those darned illness episodes.
  • Steve Csapo celebrated his son's completing an HVAC course at Alfred, and looking forward to job interviews.
  • 6/15 Spring Picnic
Your club secretary celebrated receiving an e-mail plus some great photos from the Dutch couple who shared our June 15 picnic at her house. They wrote, in part, "...we enjoyed the picknick and especially the company of all those people like Polly, Chris, Linda, Jim, Bill, DeeDee, Megan and yourself. The other (80 ???) names I do not remember. I only remember the warmth and hospitality everyone showed to us. It was such a warm welcome. ...Say hello to Hans and tell him we are sorry we didn't meet him..." I'm hoping prez Hans has an opportunity to link some of those photos to this newsletter.

And, a couple of confessions:

  • Carl Lutz admits to finding some poison ivy which landed him in hospital on July 4.
  • Kelly Cole rescued the club from the clutches of the Corny Babies, fathered some years ago by Mark Evans. In cleaning out some old cartons of supplies last week, Linda and Ed Kime (many thanks to them for this cleanup job) found a supply of the Pepto-Bismol-colored adorables. Julie Carney, Tom Vonglis, Marcy Cameron, Jim Tompsett, each took one, $5 each, to save Mark from having to purchase all the leftovers.
  • Bill Wall admits to losing his glasses on the nearly-all-old-boys' canoe trip. There's a lot more to this story, which you will not see, here, in print.

Some announcements for the good of the Club:

  • Kirk Vanderbilt is circulating the Corn Fest work sign-up sheets. Remember to volunteer early and often.
  • Julie Carney announces the "Beauty and the Beast" performances July 22 and 23, 82 students participating, including three of her children. Support this, and help keep kids safe and clean this summer.
  • Julie also announced that our incoming exchange student will be arriving at the Rochester airport, from Vienna via Toronto, on August 12. Save the date! and help to welcome her.
  • Laurie Vonglis has wheedled a picnic commitment for the club from Ted Coyne: next Tuesday, July 20, starting at 5:00 p.m. Signup sheet is circulating, also via e-mail, and bring a dish to pass.
  • We hope the Pig Roast was a success July 17, sponsored by Chris Steger, benefitting Stone's Closet. This is in memory of Chris's son, Stone, and provides backpacks, full of materials, for students in need.
  • President Hans provided a recap of last night's Board of Directors, which he will summarize for you: and thanks to each of the Board members present who gave outlines of their individual areas of oversight for the club, and updates on projects in the works.
  • Helen Zamboni announced that all club dates through October have been committed for program presentations.

Finally, the winner of the 50 / 50 proceeds of $21.00 was Carl Lutz!!

Secretary Barb Herman
