President's Message

Dear fellow Rotarians and friends. We concluded an exciting Rotary year with a very enjoyable Change-of-Officers Dinner last Tuesday. Many, many thanks to Past President Kevin, the entire Board of Directors, all committee chairs and all members, for everything you've done to help our club excel in its mission, Service Above Self!

The new year will undoubtedly also be exciting -- it's inevitable, given the 51 eclectic, engaged, fun-loving and hard-working members that make up our Club! I'm proud to be a member, and to be your president.

Speaking of Directors, I want to extend a hearty welcome to the newest Director, Marcia Cameron. We're so glad to have you on Board, Marcia! You'll be hearing from the Directors on a regular basis at Club Assemblies.

Penultimate President, and now brand-new Secretary, Barb Herman will be doing the retrospectives, below and in future newsletters, so I'll keep it brief. This coming Tuesday I will share with you in more detail what I hope we will be able to accomplish this new year. As you can tell from the Rotary theme this year, there is strong emphasis on collaboration at the international level, so I'm appealing to all of you to think about and share how you would like the club to be involved internationally this year.

Remember, Rotarians everywhere are busy "building communities, bridging continents"!

President Hans Koomen

Looking back on...

Tue 6/29 Special Meeting
Program: Change of Officers Dinner
Attendance: Absentees were not reported.

President Hans encourages all who missed a meeting to call another absentee and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line list of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Barb about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.

Reflections:

Hello, all Avon Rotarians, this is your secretary speaking!

Congratulations to Past President Kevin on an excellent year. And, now, for the new, all-new, all-improved presidency of Hans Koomen and his excellent Board of Directors..

We had a fine Change of Officers gathering on June 29, despite the SEVERAL mishaps. For those who were not present, you will have to attend on July 6 to find out about the "Golden Shovel" award and identify the winning Rotarian.

Rotarian of the Year
Tom Vonglis
Many congratulations to Tom Vonglis, our Rotarian of the Year. We hope all the club members know and appreciate the work Tom has accomplished for the club during the past year. Top of the list should be the Membership Campaign which Tom originated, planned and carried out. Few clubs in our district can show that percentage gain in members in a few months' time. Add to that, the knowledge and expertise and elbow grease Tom contributes to the arrangements at meetings, and his generosity, and there is a Rotarian to emulate.

Our two newest Paul Harris Fellows: Dr. Robert Hayes and Helen Zamboni, Esq. Congratulations to them, and, again, two wonderful members, each working for the benefit of the club in individual ways. They, also, are "benchmarks" for other club members to follow.

Rookie of the Year Award was to Pastor Dan Jones. Criteria for this award allow the committee to go back to the start date of Dan's membership, two years ago. His activities as Literacy Chair are outstanding. Thanks, and congratulations, Dan.

We were all pleased to have incoming District Governor Jeff Kranz with us to present the Paul Harris awards, and Walt Springer, our new Assistant District Governor, and their wives.

Next up: President Hans will present his thoughts and goals for the coming year as we all build the global community of Rotary.

Secretary Barb Herman

Looking forward to...
