We were all happy at our June 16 meeting to welcome Margo Harper and Tom Ippolito back from their respective hospital stays and surely wish them improving health.
And we were all very very happy to welcome Pastor Dan Jones as our newest Avon Rotarian. Dan was invited to join by past president Bruce Burritt; he gave us a fine personal introduction and some information about the Avon Wesleyan congregation and their building plans.
Privately, Dan admitted to me that I MYSELF was the first contact in Avon, when he was being interviewed by the church's board as a candidate for pastor, and he and his wife stayed with me. However, in the interest of club harmony, I will not divulge that fact. Bruce gets the credit for recruiting him, although Kelly disputes that!!
Former president and former Avonite, Steve Newvine, sent a nice note via e-mail and I was happy to share it with the Board of Directors at Monday's meeting and with the club on Tuesday. It's great to hear from Steve, and it seems clear he and Vaune are pleased with their California home and jobs.
Linda Kime provided a last report on Emiliano D'Ortenzi. Our student is certainly home in Rome, having departed Tuesday, at the end of his exchange year. Mark Evans advises that Emiliano can be reached through a FaceBook connection. Cory Collins, our Avon student-exchanging-with-Emiliano's-family, has likewise returned here.
We also received a note from Hoyt Mason in Florida, thanking us for the greeting card and bringing us up to date on Doris's status. And a thank-you was received from Jan Peterson, for our part in supporting the Lung Association's fundraiser.
Diana Williams and Kirk Vanderbilt have selected two recipients for the Building Awards in each of two categories: new construction, and renovation/remodeling. Each of the winners will be asked to attend a club meeting to receive the award, and give the club some information about their businesses. Thanks to Diana and Kirk for researching and selecting these winners.
Thanks to Jerry Dougherty for representing the club at Avon Central School's Awards Night on June 10, and to Bruce Burritt, again, for coordinating the selection of the vocational scholarship winner, Joelle Hernandez, and the technology donations to the school: these were cameras for student use.
A few local announcements: ARC announces a retail store in Mt. Morris and encourages us to patronize it. 10th annual Rotary Day at Red Wings game is June 21. Genesee Community College announces a lunch and opening celebration of a Lima campus, on June 24. Wayland Rotary will hold its 15th annual golf tournament on August 3. More information on any of these can be provided by me, if requested.
Diana presented a video and some information on credit card fraud and ATM fraud: although we are constantly amazed at what some people will do to defraud others, it is very helpful information, very wise for each of us to know.
Karl Sawicki cheerfully paid a fine for the publicity his company received in the Penny Saver for their successful Muscular Dystrophy fundraiser. Jerry Dougherty celebrated a visit from a former exchange student from Stockholm, here for a brief visit with them, the Hayeses and the Houses. And a celebration for the St. Agnes Golf Tournament on June 13. Doc Hayes also celebrated the Golf Tournament, held in memory of his son Michael. He also reminds us of the MDA "jail bailout" fundraiser during this week. Jim Tompsett presented a banner from the Indian Rocks Beach Rotary Club, obtained while Avon Rotarians were in Florida.
Tom Vonglis, the successful bidder for the corporate sponsorship of the St. Agnes Golf tournament, reported that the team of Tom + Laurie + Sean + Ryan were successful, with a 10-under score. And, the team of Tom + Laurie dethroned the Tom Ippolito + Ben team at the Quad Cities golf, last week. That's a serious accomplishment!!
Margo thanked the club for the fruit basket she received while home recuperating. Tom Ippolito also expressed thanks for a similar gift after his hospitalization. Tom also celebrated his grandson's award for outstanding academic achievement at his school.
A brief report on our Board of Directors meeting of June 15: the Board voted to contribute $1,000.00 to the Polio Plus Campaign; to donate $500.00 to the Avon Free Library for its summer reading program; and to support the Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse summertime "Dime Carnival".
Helen Zamboni offers two dates in the new program year when program presenters and topics are needed. Check with Helen on dates and sources for presenters.
I am most grateful for the expressions of support and encouragement offered by Kevin Tompsett, and -- apparently seconded by all the club members -- for my year as president. We'll be applauding Kevin as our new president when we convene at the Rabbit Room in Honeoye Falls this Tuesday for our Change of Officers dinner and celebration.
That's all the news for now.
Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another absentee and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District. |

The Avon Rotary calendar is also available at http://www.avonrotary.org/calendar.php.
For lack of contributions from the esteemed membership, here are some more deep thoughts to mull over:
- What if there were no hypothetical questions?
- If a deaf person signs swear words, does his mother wash his hands with soap?
- If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?
- Is there another word for synonym?
- Where do forest rangers go to 'get away from it all'?
- What do you do when you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant?
