A great time was had by all!! at the Quad Cities Golf Tournament and Dinner on Monday, June 8, at Livingston Country Club. There were SOME complaints from some Avon Rotarians about certain body parts being drenched by the rain, but most of the golfers were pleased with the day's results: and Avon Rotarians finished ONE - TWO - THREE -- in the golf scoring.
It was a good turnout, too: Mount Morris was well represented; their president, Dan Santini, hopes to host this event next year. Geneseo Club had 26 members present, Cal-Mum had 11 members there, and we were represented by 23 in attendance.
And weren't we happy to honor our club secretary Diana Williams for her "Rookie" status. Diana is a wonderful addition to our club, and we are so happy to recognize her. Thanks to the three past-presidents who reviewed and selected this winner.
Geneseo honored Art Hatton as a "Lifetime Achievement" winner, and Cal-Mum honored Jay Ward, in the same way. The Honorable Dennis Cohen gave a presentation full of the incidents, anecdotes and challenges of his current assignment with Livingston County Courts -- the humor does not conceal the tragic status of many of the cases before him.
We were all pleased to have our Emiliano D'Ortenzi with our club that night, for his last official club activity. At this writing, he is probably doing the final packing for his return to Italy. He expects to arrive home on Tuesday this week.
It seems that Bill Wall won the "Longest Drive" award on the golf course. However, he hit from the senior tee, right next to the ladies' tee. Oh, well, good work, anyway, Bill. The other clubs apparently couldn't take the competition and did not finish the course. "Rain" was their excuse.
Geneseo Club reminds us to patronize their Geneseo Days celebration, July 10-12. It's always an enjoyable festival with lots of food, crafts and fun activities.
Other clubs have their summertime fund-raisers, also: Wayland Rotary invites participation in its 15th annual Golf Tournament, Monday, August 3, at Conesus Golf Club. Info is available from Lou Hazlett (585) 384 - 5453 or George Smith (585) 728 - 2892.
And the 10th Anniversary Rotary Day at Frontier Field will be next Sunday, the 21st, Rochester Red WIngs battling the Toledo Mud Hens. Info from Red Wings Rep Bob Craig, at 454 - 1001 x 3021.
New club in town: Rochester NW Rotary was chartered this week. We wish them well!!
Genesee Community College announces the opening of its Lima Campus Center with a kickoff luncheon Wednesday, June 24, at the Pastaria Restaurant, Main Street. Info from pahume@genesee.edu.
The ARC of Livingston-Wyoming has opened a retail shop at 86 Main Street, Mt. Morris, providing "quality, affordable pre-owned items for customers, and also providing gainful, upwardly-mobile employment for people with disabilities." The shop is "Finders Keepers", phone 658 - 3311.
We've received a nice note with photo from Hoyt Mason, which will circulate at Tuesday's meeting: in part, it says, "It meant a lot to Doris and me. We miss you people and Avon...I bring Doris home after breakfast and take her back to the nursing facility here after lunch. She manages to get around reasonably well with a walker...Our best to you all." Hoyt proudly announces he has finished his 52nd year as a Rotarian.
Thanks to Jerry Dougherty and Kirk Vanderbilt for representing our club at Avon Central School's Awards ceremony on Wednesday, June 10. Our vocational scholarship awardee is Joelle Hernandez. The technology awards presentation was also made.
And in other GREAT news: Tom Ippolito and Margo Harper are both home from hospital stays. There's a rumor (started by Tom) that he intends to get out on the golf course this weekend.
Our next -- and FINAL for this presidential year -- Board meeting is Monday, June 15, Hurricane Technologies' conference room, 7:00 p.m. Our next regular dinner meeting will be the next night, June 16, at Peppermints. We expect to induct our newest member, Pastor Dan Jones, at that time.
For those who want to attend, the Rotary-Lions picnic is June 17 at the Avon Downs. And (as Porky Pig used to say) "th..th.. that's all, folks."
Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!
You may recall that I passed the hat a few weeks ago asking for support for my daughter Maria's benefit run, which yielded an amazing $89.
Here's her thank-you note:
Dearest friends, supporters, Rotarians:

If you have not heard the prelude to the 2009 Vancouver International Marathon I ran, let me divulge...
In May 2008, I volunteered in Southeast Asia with a troupe of fellow Wilfrid Laurier University students. We spent two weeks in Kompong Speu province, Cambodia, and two weeks on the Myanmar border of Thailand. The most influential piece of this trip was working in Kompong Speu in the AIDS orphanage named 'New Hope for Cambodian Children.' As modest a slice of life I spent with them, these children made an everlasting imprint on me. The complexity of each of their stories and lives but simplicity of their happiness had me rather floored. I have kept them all in my hearts and thoughts, and have decided to make efforts in my daily life to keep those smiles shining bright.
I recently moved to Aspen, Colorado, to take a job at the historic Wheeler Opera House. This has been a huge transition for me as I've left the buzzing life of University with six billion jobs on the side behind. I took the transition into a 40-hour work week with a bit of a blow and decided it was time to put the challenge back into my daily life -- why not run a marathon? What better way to run a marathon than to run it for something I believed in and cherished dearly? I registered for the 2009 Vancouver International Marathon one blistery day in December and went for a jog. Five months, way too many miles and $839 later, I completed 42.2 kilometers of beautiful British Columbia for the 110 kiddies I will never forget.
I would like to humbly thank each and every one of you for donating to this awesome cause - whether it was cash tendered or a smile of support, it made the difference.
My best, brightest smile,
Maria Koomen

The Avon Rotary calendar is also available at http://www.avonrotary.org/calendar.php.
For lack of contributions from the esteemed membership, I'll give you some deep thoughts to mull over in the next few weeks:
- Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.
- One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.
- Atheism is a non-prophet organization.
- If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?
- The main reason that santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.
- I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "where's the self-help section?"
She said, if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
