Another gorgeous day in downtown Avon, and hopefully in many other parts of our world.
We had a wonderful gift from the Bank of Castile, this week, on the occasion of the Bank's 20th anniversary in Avon -- and the institution's 120 years in the area. The celebration on Wednesday, June 3, was highlighted with a reception, excellent snacks and beverages. Jim Fulmer, president of the bank, presented three Avon groups with cash contributions. Our club was recognized, along with the Avon Food Pantry and the Lions Club. We had indicated to the bank, in advance, that we would probably use the contribution for a literacy project. This will be on the agenda when our board meets on June 15.
Two of our club members have had hospitalizations during this week. We hope that Tom Ippolito will soon be back home and ready to swing those golf clubs again. Margo Harper returned home on Thursday and is in good spirits while she continues to recuperate. Both Tom and Margo enjoy phone calls from their friends.
And, speaking of golf clubs, remember that our official club meeting this week is on Monday, June 8, with the golf outing and dinner at Livingston Country Club, in cooperation with the Geneseo, Cal-Mum and Mt. Morris clubs. NO meeting at Peppermints this week.
Our meeting on June 2 began with Bob French leading the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, Tom Ippolito leading us in "You're a Grand Old Flag" and the club prayer led by Reverend Bert Croop, including a prayer for the family of Melissa Rowe. Secretary Diana was absent due to this family need.
The No Fine button was auctioned off to Charles Feller -- last chance this presidential year to buy this button!
Laurie Vonglis is still collecting monies for the Change of Officers dinner on June 23, which will be our official meeting that week. For the week of June 16, we WILL have a Peppermints meeting on that date. The Rotary-Lions picnic on June 17 is an additional activity, optional. Laurie also reminds us of program ads needed to make the Corn Fest program successful.
Jerry Dougherty distributed names of potential advertisers. Linda Kime outshone all you other Avon Rotarians by volunteering to contact many, many companies. With the national, international, and local economies in unsteady times, it is more important than ever that we make our fundraisers successful.
Celebrations:
Our guest presenter this week was Deborah Martin, manager of the Rochester Regional Office of the Attorney General of New York State. She discussed the easy access to information on the AG's website, called "Project Sunlight". She also discussed several instances of consumer needs in fraud cases, what she referred to as "Scams and Scoundrels".
Our students presented a recap of the District Conference last month in Cleveland. Danielle McBride, our Interact president, Emiliano D'Ortenzi, exchange student from Italy, and Catherine Lloyd, soon-to-be-in-Argentina as an exchange student: all three were present to review the weekend with a "Rotary Rocks" video, and to thank the club for the experience of attending. Catherine carried the flag of Argentina, and Danielle carried the flag for Avon, alphabetically first in the list of clubs present.
Upcoming special event: Pastor Dan Jones will be inducted into our club on Tuesday, June 16. Be sure to welcome him then.
Linda Kime announces that our incoming exchange student will be Douglas Petiot, arriving from Paris.
Emiliano will need transportation for a trip to Painted Post on June 13. Contact Linda or Doug Reed to volunteer.
Some District 7120 announcements: a reminder on the 10th anniversary date at Frontier Field, with the Red Wings playing the Toledo Mud Hens, Sunday, June 21. Prices, times, reservation info available at the District website.
Past ADG Richard Nereau has brought us up to date on Area 8 Literacy projects, with the totals of books collected to date, the Principals' Book of the Month project for which our club contributes $400.00, and a potential literacy project with the State School at Industry. Richard will be looking for 3 volunteers from our club to assist in tutoring and reading at the school.
Police Chief Jim Carney visited us to request contributions for the "Dream Factory" organization, making needy children's dreams real. In its fourth year, the group has collected about $3,000.00 to date. Thank you, each, for your donation to this project.
FINALLY, thanks to all those who bid on the corporate package for golfers, in support of St. Agnes School. Successful bidder was Hurricane Technologies' Tom Vonglis, with a bid of $425.00, reducing the cost to our club treasury.
The coloring books brought to us by our ADG Luisa Barrs were also auctioned off, along with the souvenirs from the bunch who vacationed in Jamaica. Each contribution helps our club!! so, thanks to all.
Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!
