President's Message

It's another beautiful spring morning -- our rhododendron bush is in its full hot-pink glorious bloom.

Our brand-new Rotarian, Greg Johnson, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag for our Tuesday, May 26, meeting, and "America the Beautiful" was belted out by our songleaders Tim Dickinson, Bruce Burritt and Tom Ippolito.

A huge welcome for our guests, Juliana and her husband Eduardo Sedin, visiting from Brazil. Juliana was the club's foreign exchange student in 1993, and her sister Veronica two years later. It was delightful to have them at our meeting while they are spending some time with their host families, the Houses, the Doughertys and the Coles. We also welcomed Bruce Nye, formerly of the Cal-Mum club, now living in Conway, South Carolina. He also celebrated the reason for his visit up north: granddaughters graduating from Fredonia and Nazareth Colleges.

Emiliano, our exchange student, was with us, and Danielle, our Interact President, too!!

Our guest presenter, introduced by Dr. Wayne Warriner, was Ellen Warren, of the Veterans Outreach Center in Rochester. Her very impressive discussion included facts on the service men and women returning from this century's conflicts and the contrasts with those from Korean or Vietnam conflicts. The VOC provides a wide spectrum of services including case management in cooperation with other local agencies, and employment assistance. 15% of returning veterans from Operation Enduring Freedom are women.

Thanks, Joe Callahan, for bringing us news on Karl Sawicki's daughter; her knee surgery prevents Karl from being at his usual post this evening, greeting us all.

Jim Tompsett announced that he will be requiring $800 in "bail money" when the Muscular Dystrophy Association has him in lockup. Is there anyone here who wants to help him be released? I thought not. Make the most of your time "inside", Jim.

Tom Ippolito has the Rotarian of the Year award poster. If there is any club member who has not yet signed it, please be sure to see Tom.

Thanks to Jerry Dougherty for circulating greeting cards to two former Avon club members: Hoyt Mason, now in Florida, and Harry Clemens, in Avon Nursing Home.

Other celebrations at Tuesday's meeting: Bill Shaw celebrated a 16-day trip via train, plane and houseboat to Lake Powell. His travel companions were Steve Stephenson, Bob Wright and Bob French. Apparently, it was all too much for Bob French, as he is absent from tonight's meeting. Thanks for the souvenir tee, Bill. Steve celebrated the visit to Chicago's Union Station enroute.

Hans Koomen celebrated our club website's 25,000th visitor. Much of that traffic success is due to Hans's diligent caring for the site, and making it so appealing. Thanks, Hans!!

Sue O'Hearn celebrated a visit to Michigan to enjoy a niece's graduation.

We were delighted to have three Avon students recognized on May 27 as Students of the Month for the last months of 2009's spring semester: Daniel Banach, Corey Upright, and Laura Schwab. Your president presented the certificates with honorary Rotarian/school Superintendent Bruce Amey. Each student's unique growth and contributions were celebrated, and Mark Evans helped the presentations with photo-taking. Where are you hiding the photos, Mark?

Joe Callahan was the 50 / 50 winner with a "pot" of $22.00. Spend wisely, Joe. That's your club's Economic Stimulus to you.

Charlie Mitschow will be awarded his Eagle Scout on Saturday, June 6, at St. Agnes, at 1:00 p.m. This is the troup's 62nd Eagle Scout, a wonderful achievement.

Since the big-checkbook-wielders were not present to bid on our auction-able package for the Michael Hayes Memorial Golf Tournament, we will hope to have this take place this Tuesday, June 2.

See you all, then, at Peppermints.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman

Avon Community Fitness/Nature Trail Will Promote Active Lifestyle

Over 100 youth and adults from Avon volunteered their time and talent to construct the Avon Community Fitness/Nature Trail. On April 25, 2009 at the Avon Driving Park, Avon students, community organizations, church groups and families worked with local builders to make the trail a reality. The 1.3 mile trail includes 12 fitness stations that promote physical activity as part of a healthy, fit lifestyle. In addition, butterfly and song bird gardens, flora and fauna markers, and the beautiful surroundings of the Driving Park will encourage a connection with nature.

Avon Community Engaged (ACE) and Avon Rotary initiated the trail project by securing a grant from Rotary International. Avon churches, businesses, civic organizations, municipal governments, and citizens supported the project through donations of time and resources.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is being organized for the summer. There are plans to expand the trail. If you are interested in contributing time, talent or resources to the Avon Community Fitness Trail, please contact ACE Treasurer, Deb Gage at 226-2633, or Executive Committee Member, Cindy Zhe at 226-8274.
