We had a wonderful picnic get-together on Tuesday, May 19, at my house --- and some Rotary business, too!
Thanks to Tom and Laurie Vonglis for all the hauling of tables and chairs, the paper supplies, the beverages, for cooking and delivering the hot dogs, and the planning to start it all off. And thanks to each of you Rotarians who attended and brought such delicious dishes to share. The weather was perfect, and I'm very happy to have been able to have each of you there.
It was excellent to see how each of you welcomed Alan and Clare, our unexpected guests from Lindford, in Hampshire, England, enroute on their "Coast to Coast Canada 2009" excursion on their BMW bike. They were so pleased to meet everyone and to enjoy your hospitality. Thanks, Jerry Dougherty, for reminding me that, "That's what Rotary is all about...international friendships"!!
It was also great to have Emiliano with us that evening... he'll be heading home to Italy pretty soon.
We were glad to welcome our Assistant District Governor Luisa Barrs and her husband Wim, and thank her for bringing along our Literacy Recognition Award. Literacy is not only a Rotary International goal and emphasis; it's also a cause and a project I very much support, and we should be proud to have participated so eagerly in literacy projects this year.
Thanks to Jim Yencer (yes, there really is a member of our club named Jim Yencer) for giving us an update on Scouting activities in Avon. We're proud to support scouting here: and congratulations to the leaders who have increased the troup sizes so admirably the past couple of years.
Remember to bring your checkbooks to our Tuesday meeting. We'll be auctioning off the golf package to support St. Agnes School. We'll also auction the gifts Kirk Vanderbilt brought from Jamaica.
A few notes from other clubs, for all you golfers who can't get enough of the sport: District Secretary Bill Redden sends news of the Wolcott Club, with an invitation to play in their golf tournament June 20 at the East Port Bay Golf Course. The Penfield Club is holding its golf tournament on Monday, June 1, at Shadow Lake. Another note for the District 7120 Change Over Dinner June 27 at Frontier Field, also. Details/costs for these should be available on the District website.
Past ADG Richard Nereau has passed along word on another literacy project to start this September: one-on-one tutoring for some of the young folks at Industry. He promises to send details as they are firmed up.
Hope to see everyone back at Peppermints on Tuesday, May 26. Until then,
Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another absentee and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District. |
