President's Message

A happy Mother's Day to all those women Rotarians who have children, of any age, and all those Rotarians who will be in touch with their mothers on this day.

And speaking of women Rotarians: you know that in some countries, where women are not Rotary members, there may be "auxiliary" groups called "Rotari - anns" or " Inner Wheel Clubs". Interesting, huh?

Our meeting of May 5 celebrated this beautiful time of year, with Gladys Iler and our fearless songleaders choosing "America the Beautiful" and "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning". Great choices!

Our birthday people for May are Marcy Cameron, Tim Dickinson, Sue O'Hearn, and Doug Reed. And our wedding anniversary celebrants for May are Marcy Cameron, Kelly Cole, Charles Feller, Linda Kime and Jim Yencer. Add to that list: Greg Johnson!

Yes, we are pleased and proud to welcome Greg Johnson to our club roster. Thanks to Bruce Burritt for recruiting him, and for the induction ceremony at Tuesday's meeting. Greg gave us some background and history on his work and his career and his business. Add Greg's website to your club roster: www.jfrestoration.com and reach him by e-mail as greg at jfrestoration.com.

Pastor Dan Jones has also been proposed as a new member, by Bruce Burritt. And we-hope-potential-member Paul Drozdziel was with us for this week's meeting.

Tom Vonglis was the successful bidder for the No Fine button, with some stiff competition from a couple of white-haired fellows who claim to be twin brothers.

Ernie Wiard gave us a brief review of the students he transported to and from the District Conference in Cleveland this past weekend. Ernie reports they were totally absorbed in their tripods -- er, iPods -- on the trip home. And for those who are interested, you may download a video of District Governor Mike Leone talking with his 9-year old son Nicholas at the banquet in Cleveland. Go to www.rotary7120.org and click the link above Mike's picture. Or just click here to go directly to the YouTube video.

Apparently the Geneseo Club has settled on some of the arrangements for the Quad Cities gathering on June 8. We've now been informed that prices are $25.00 for golf including cart, golf times 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. Dinner is a buffet with pork loin, chicken tenders, pasta, potatoes and salad, at $20.00 including tax and tip; and times are 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. for social hour, dinner at 7:00, at Livingston Country Club. If prices change again, do not hold me responsible. Geneseo president Chris Rider says " each club will have a brief meeting" -- it is not clear if he intends each club to conduct business, or to present club information to the other three clubs ??? Apparently, we find out when we get there. Chris states we should be finished by 8:30 p.m.

An update on Rotarian Charlie Pease: several club members have been to visit him. Dave Henehan reports that he is home and progressing in his recuperation. Ben Siragusa has taken Charlie to a medical appointment.

Bill Shaw was our program presenter this week, and Tom Bartolini, the new business administrator for the Avon Ambulance, was our guest presenter, with an interesting discussion of his new role for the ambulance service.

Lots of celebrations to enjoy at this week's meeting: Kirk Vanderbilt brought gifts from the group's vacation in Jamaica. They'll be auctioned off this week: a genuine coffee mug of the Jamaica Olympic Bobsled Team of 1987 and other goodies. Laurie Vonglis celebrated the time in Jamaica for herself and Tom. Jim Tompsett celebrated five weeks away including time in Florida.

Kelly Cole celebrated the wonderful support and care extended to his mom by Doc and Polly Hayes, Jerry and Kim Dougherty and Jim and Sally Tompsett, during her mishap and hospitalization in Florida.

Joe Callahan forgot to turn off his cell phone during the meeting. Sorry, Joe, that's a fine-able offense!! Joe reluctantly admitted to the acquisition of a new water-based vehicle. Kevin and Jim Tompsett both had to celebrate new boat acquisitions, too.

Hans: many, many thanks for bringing to the club's attention another important "birthday" -- today, actually -- the 82nd anniversary of the founding of Avon Rotary. Hans also celebrated his daughter Becky's recently awarded full scholarship to pursue postgraduate studies at St. Andrews University in Scotland, and his daughter Maria's life-altering work during a mission trip to Cambodia on behalf of AIDS-orphaned children. Thanks to club members who filled the passed hat, to add to Maria's marathon fundraiser in Vancouver, for this project.

Doug Reed celebrated Joe and Joan Prinzi's being named Senior Citizens of the Year for Avon, by the Livingston County Office of the Aging.

Bill Wall finally got a new badge, and he was delighted to pay $5.00 for the replacement for the badge he either lost or allowed to be stolen. Bill also seems to have acquired a new camper, but he won't admit to its size or age.

Your president was fined for not knowing that Avon Youth Baseball had sent a certificate of appreciation to our club for its support. Of course, the certificate was in Ernie's possession, so, who could know? I also acquired a baseball cap -- for those who REALLY know me, you know that it will remain unworn. Thanks, anyway, Ernie.

One more announcement: the Lions Club has decided to host its Rotary-Lions Picnic on Wednesday, June 17. No matter, that they did not communicate with our club president or Board before setting the date. We'll talk about this on Tuesday.

Winner of our 50 / 50 for this week was Doug Reed -- first time you've ever won, Doug? Keep investing !!!

This week you will hear about the District 7120 10th Anniversary Rotary Day at Red Wings' Frontier Field, June 21.

Board of Directors meeting, Monday, May 11, 7:00 p.m., Hurricane Technologies' Conference Room.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman
