It's a grand and glorious Easter morning, as I prepare this newsletter. We won't complain about the cold temps, as long as it's not snow and it's not rain, will we???
On this day, I am delighted to be here to watch another springtime come to life. I'm grateful for all the people who have touched my life in the past year --- friends, colleagues, relatives -- and for the time each of them had for me, in their lifetimes.
We celebrated our April birthday members on April 7: Bruce Burritt, Mark Evans, Don Cook, and Doctor Hayes. And Bruce Burritt was the wedding anniversary celebrant. Congratulations to each of you.
Kirk Vanderbilt was the successful bidder for the "No Fine" button. It seems Kirk has a month of deviltry planned.
We also remembered in our thoughts and prayers those who are undergoing illnesses or surgery: Betty Croop, Barb Cole, and Tom Ippolito.
There was some fining going on during our April 7 meeting: all the members who were unable to recite the four-way test in its entirety were fined for this lapse.
Our own Interact Club thanked us for supporting their bake sale. We' re looking forward to their completing the "Pennies for Polio" drive during April.
A postcard from past president Jim Tompsett purported to show the Board of Directors of our club. Funny: Doctor Tompsett never had pictures like that when HE was Club President...
Thanks to Laurie Vonglis for recapping the District Assembly of April 4. It's always a great experience to attend an Assembly and an excellent chance to meet other clubs' members and do some idea-exchanging.
The deadline for ordering roses from the Rochester Deaf Rotary Club is May 1. This is a wonderful way to support this young club, and you can't find a better bargain for Mothers' Day: a dozen red roses for $25.00, and all proceeds go to the Deaf Rotary community projects. Contact president@deafrotary.org to place your order.
The Milt Matthews Hospitality Program for incoming District Governors from all 'round the world will take place January 8 through January 16, next year. Please let me know if anyone is interested in working on this. We need entertainment during the daytime when they are in our area and someone to help with activities -- please let us continue this great hospitality program by assisting.
Thanks to Ben Siragusa for introducing our club to his friend-and-colleague hydrogeologist Pete Smith, and a most interesting presentation on geo-thermal systems.
Celebrations were many: Tom Vonglis celebrated a wonderful weekend at Inlet, which grew to include Glens Falls and being present for the Avon Boys' Basketball championship game; and, Tom's and Laurie's son purchase of a house; and a fishing trip to Costa Rica.
Bruce Burritt celebrated several weeks in Florida, and found that his cell phone does not swim too well. He successfully negotiated a replacement while there, however.!!
Steve Stephenson celebrated two weeks in Florida and brought back for me -- you had to see it to believe it -- two tiny seashells. Ben Siragusa saved Steve from embarassment by bidding $2.00 for the shells.
Bob French celebrated getting his boat launched for the season, despite the coolness of Tuesday's weather. Margo Harper celebrated a week in South America and announced a Michigan State loss.
Kirk Vanderbilt celebrated his mom's life: his eulogy for her was beautiful and her life achievements show why everyone in Avon says, "She will be missed".
Finally, thanks to Doug Reed for circulating the "Pennies for Polio" container, so that our own club can contribute to the Interact club efforts.
Tom Vonglis was the lucky winner of the 50 / 50 drawing. Tom knows how to invest his money wisely: he called the winnings his "Duffy Dollars".
Changes to District 7120's Policies and Procedures are posted on the District website, and will be voted on at the Conference.
Don't forget that Saturday, April 25, is the "Installation" day for the Fitness Stations at the Downs. Since our Club is helping to sponsor this project with a District Simplified Grant, and many individual club members are also supporting it financially, it will be great to be there to contribute hands-on assistance.
We will have a brief presentation at this Tuesday's meeting by Laurie Cruz, on the successor fundraiser for the Crop Walk.
The date for the Quad City get-together -- with Geneseo, Mt. Morris and Cal-Mum clubs joining in -- is Monday, June 8. The program is the usual golf-plus-dinner-plus-awards, at Livingston Country Club. This will be our official meeting for that week -- no meeting on Tuesday, June 9. For that month, the Board of Directors will reschedule its Board meeting.
Board of Directors meets Monday, April 13, 7:30 p.m. at Hurricane Technologies.
