We all owe a big "thank you" to the Rotarians (and we know who you are!!) who came up with the idea of a night to celebrate the achievements of Avon's boys' basketball team. It turned out to be a splendid gathering, and we were delighted to have Principal Chris Salinas, Coach Rob Fries and his wife Michele, and Brian Paganin join us for dinner. The team members were looking terrific in their "dress up" clothes -- and they are most certainly a group of impressive young men.
Thanks go, as always, to the banquet preparers: to cooks Ernie Wiard and Kelly Cole; to Social Committee members Jerry Dougherty, Laurie Vonglis, and Ernie; and to Ben Siragusa who helped out all afternoon at the V.F.W. Hall to help prepare; and to Tom Vonglis, for the slide show and audio equipment. The clean-up crew is excellent!! thanks to the vacuum-cleaner team of Bob House and Bill Wall. Laurie is to be commended, also, for the beautiful certificates for each team member.
We were certainly impressed with the remarks Chris Salinas and Rob Fries offered: it is clear that their philosophies of education which emphasize good value systems and teamwork have been absorbed and accepted by the students.
It was great to have special guests Don LeFeber and his wife, grandparents to the Hayes teammember, and our Town Supervisor Dave LeFeber joining us for the evening, also.
There were a number of Rotarians who were not totally clear on the items in the Four Way Test. You'd better study up.
We have just submitted our entry for the District 7120 Literacy Award program. We successfully completed five projects encouraged by the District. These include: 1) Dictionaries distributed to 98 students in two schools; 2) contributing books to the Scottsville club-organized books collected and representing our club at School #11/33 in December; 3) supporting two projects at the Avon Free Library, which attracted over 100 children and parents to their Summer Reading Program; 4) contribution of magazines to school; and finally, 5) "Rotary Reads" in March, 9 Rotarians reading to students in two schools; and computer awards, which are represented in our budget plan. We expect to receive recognition for these accomplishments at the District Conference in Cleveland, next month.
And, we have submitted our application for a District Simplified Grant, to help with the expenses of the Ugandan Water Project. More on this, as information becomes available, and the Board's decisions are solidified.
Club members who attended the District Assembly in Waterloo on Saturday, April 4, will probably have some reports for us at Tuesday's meeting. I was unable to attend, due to a last-minute reservation for my b-and-b.
The Board will meet next on Monday, April 13 at Hurricane Technologies.
Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another absentee and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District. |

This week a rare glimpse of what really goes on behind the walls of the Newsletter's editorial offices:
An avid reader writes:
Your grateful editor responds:I just want to say how wonderful a job you two do on the AVON ROTARY NEWSLETTER! It means so much to me (and I am sure others as well) that miss a meeting (or two) to be able to read all the happenings. It is almost like being there and with all the meetings I am suddenly missing due to family stuff I wish to thank you so much!!!
Your diligent news reporter comments:Thanks for your endorsement, dear reader. Such positive feedback is relatively rare but very welcome!
Your tireless editor parries:I just wanted you to realize that next year I am going to ask for a raise. I am going to request DOUBLING my salary from this year.
Ask for a DOUBLING of your salary??? Pshaw! I'd like to see you make that dream real! Fat chance that'll have with the Board Of Directors in these economic times. Instead, I suggest we lead the way by announcing that we will REFUND our ENTIRE year-end BONUS! Not only that, we will throw in AN EXTRA 25% for the good of the club. And we'll challenge the rest of the club to try and match our generosity!
Please submit your favorite sayings, noteworthy
events, jokes, and I'll gladly include it here.
