President's Message

We were delighted to have our Assistant District Governor Luisa Barrs lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag for the opening of our meeting on March 24 and happy to have her husband Wim joining her for the visit.

Sad news today -- Barb Vanderbilt, Kirk's mother, passed away that morning, unexpectedly, and our thoughts and prayers certainly go to Kirk, Karen, and Steve, and all the rest of Barb's family. She will be missed in the Avon community.

To welcome in the springtime season, our songleaders and our pianist-non-pareil Gladys Iler helped us to sing, "When the Red Red Robin...." Thank you, Gladys and songleaders!

Guests this week included Danielle McBride, president of the Interact Club, and Ashley Reed, Doug's daughter. Welcome!! Also a big welcome to Ed Kime who helped a great deal at this Sunday's pancake breakfast for all the exchange students. Thanks to Ernie Wiard for the cooking, and to Linda Kime and Doug Reed who did all the planning, organizing, transporting and many other chores to make this weekend memorable and productive for all the exchange students.

Some announcements for all of us:

The Rochester Deaf Rotary Club is hosting an evening of Wine/Culture/Auction on Friday, April 3. For a generous and thoughtful way to support this young club, email to Michele Randall, secretary@deafrotary.org -- the cost is only $25.00 and you will receive: a beginning ASL class at 6:30, then at 7:30 the wine tasting, food, raffles and the silent auction. Location for the event: R.I.T. Inn & Conference Center, West Henrietta Road.

Jerry Dougherty reports that the Penny Saver will have an ad congratulating the Avon boys' basketball team on their statewide win. Each Rotarian is invited to participate, $15.00 per sponsor, and the Penny Saver will invoice participants.

And a further celebration of this win: next Tuesday, March 31, our club will host the team, plus principal Chris Salinas, and head coach Rob Fries at a steak cook-out dinner. Location: VFW Hall in East Avon. We hope all club members are there to recognize and support the team for their wonderful accomplishment.

It is not too late to register for the District 7120 Conference in Cleveland. Wayne Warriner reminds us that Cleveland is a great city and encourages anyone who has not been there to attend.

We had a letter of appreciation for receipt of the Paul Harris Award, from Dr. Jerry Benjamin -- he concluded, " I thank you for that special evening, for this special award, and for this special memory". The March 8 issue of the Penny Saver celebrated this event with its "Hometown Stories" feature.

Celebrations included a great weekend spent at the Vonglis camp at Inlet by the Coles, the Doughertys and the Houses. Of course, Tom and Laurie were there, too. Everyone is proud of Jerry Dougherty for updating his wardrobe to at least 1970 with a pair of Levi's.

Diana Williams celebrated her son Ben's completion of his U.S. Marine Corps program at Parris Island; he expects to go on to a Georgia camp and infantry deployment after that. Good luck to him.

Ben Siragusa celebrated two weeks in the sun in Florida, and Joe Callahan also enjoyed some time visiting relatives and enjoying Florida weather.

Ted Coyne celebrated his vacation in Mexico. He claims he spent a great deal of time on the beach, reading. His choice of literature: "How to be the World's Greatest Cheapskate". There were some grumblings from the audience that Ted had written that book.

Danielle McBride, our Interact President, reports that "Pennies for Polio" collections will take place at the school on March 31 and April 7. Thanks to her for organizing and following through on this R.I. project.

Bob House was our 50/ 50 winner. We trust he invested his winnings appropriately.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman
