President's Message

It was a very fine Saint Patrick's Day celebration for club members who attended our gathering on Tuesday, March 17, the very day of the Saint's fame. Thanks, as always, to Laurie Vonglis for the arrangements, which featured catering by the Carneys. And special thanks to Tom Vonglis for making connections with Lou Masi for the use of the beautiful community center building. Our members who were cleanup crew were very dutiful in bringing everything in the center back to sparkling.

Doug Reed and LuAnn, and Linda Kime and Ed, did an excellent job last weekend with our District 7120 exchange students. They make it look easy!! but there was a great deal of work and collaboration with other facilities, in order to present an excellent weekend of activities for the students. Ernie Wiard, thanks for preparing the breakfast at St. Agnes School building on Sunday morning. The next activity for exchange students will be attending the District Conference in Cleveland, May 1 and 2, and Linda is continuing to try to work out travel arrangements for them.

A message from Zion Episcopal Church announces a Ham Dinner for Saturday, April 4. This would be a fine way to end your day of helping at the Fitness Trail at the Downs -- contact Kirk Vanderbilt and show up that morning to assist.

Rochester Deaf Rotary is sponsoring "A Night of Wine and Culture" fundraiser on Friday, April 3. It's at the R.I.T. Inn and Conference Center, 5257 W. Henrietta Road, starting at 6:30 p.m. with Beginner ASL lessons. At 7:30 there will be wine tastings, food and raffles and a silent auction. $25 ticket price includes a wineglass to take home. Info or reservations: secretary@deafrotary.org. Or Box 18078, Rochester 14618. Or purchase tickets at Scottsville Spirits, 3892 Scottsville Road. This is an excellent way to support this young Rotary Club.

We are preparing our Literacy Recognition application. Please confirm to me by e-mail the date each of you volunteered to participate in literacy activities: especially, the dates you read to children in the elementary grades. Thanks to each of you who helped with this fun project. Developing the habit of reading in children is basic to being educated adults.

Past Prez Bill Wall is planning on a Saturday road cleanup project, for a contract our club has with N.Y.S. D.O.T. We will be working along Route 39, as always. As soon as Bill has a firm date, he'll advise. Thanks, Bill, for this work.

As announced, the District Assembly will be April 4 in Waterloo. Laurie Vonglis has volunteered to provide a wine basket to be raffled as a fundraiser at the assembly. Thank you, Laurie. And we will be needing a $50.00-value gift to be raffled at the District Conference in Cleveland. Any sponsors?? or any ideas?? please let me know.

For those of you who believe in basketball as a life, you have probably already received District Secretary Bill Redden's notice regarding becoming a Rotary Benefactor under Rotary's "March Madness" program. If you want more info, please contact him.

We have also received a plea for support from the Rotary Club of Kandy in Sri Lanka, www.cfhsrilanka.org, for their program to serve physically handicapped and underprivileged persons, especially those in need of artificial limbs.

That's about all the news for this weekend. I look forward to seeing everyone at this week's meeting, Tuesday, March 24, at our old stomping grounds, Peppermints.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman

Looking back on...

Tue 3/17 Special Meeting
Program: St. Patrick's Day celebration
Attendance: Absentees were not reported.

President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another AWOL and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.

Looking forward to...
