President's Message

What a glorious sunny day to greet us, today, and to recognize that spring is on its way.

Our news today is looking forward to that springtime, and, of course, to our St. Patrick's Day celebration in place of our regular dinner meeting, Tuesday, March 17. We will gather at 5:00 p.m. in the Community Center Building behind Peppermints and at the rear of the apartment and townhouse development. Thanks to Mascot Builders for allowing us the use of this beautiful building and to Laurie and Tom Vonglis for this connection. And, thanks to Laurie -- as she always does -- for arranging the meal and the program for the evening.

Remember, help is needed at the end of the evening for cleanup and restoring the building to its pre-party cleanliness and order. This is a small way to indicate our appreciation for being able to use this facility!!

Our meeting of March 10 was a brief one because it was to be followed by Corn Fest Committee meeting.

Our guests were Karen Vanderbilt, who is generously volunteering for the Corn Fest Committee, and Doug Reed's daughter, Ashley. Welcome to both. And congratulations to Ashley for achieving Honor Roll and (we think congratulations ??) for her new driver's license. And it was good to have Linda Kime present, also.

We celebrated Doug's receiving a Paul Harris Fellowship from the Lima Club. Congratulations!! and we're happy you are with Avon, now.

Kirk Vanderbilt reminded us of the work dates for the Avon Community Cares project, the Avon Fitness Trail, at Avon Downs. April 4 will be an "organizing and assembling materials" day (meet at 9:00 a.m.), and April 25 will be a construction day (bring your tools) . Many hands are needed to complete this project. What an excellent way to provide hands-on service to our community.

Again, a reminder that District 7120 Conference will be in Cleveland, the first weekend in May. Please check your schedules: if anyone is able to attend, please let me know. Our exchange students should be attending -- Linda and Doug are working on arranging transportation for them.

This year's Quad City get-together will be hosted by Geneseo Club, and a date mid-May to mid-June is probable. Mt. Morris will be the fourth in the "quad", with Geneseo, Cal-Mum, and our club. More to follow, as info becomes available.

The "Rotary Reads" project for March is progressing well. To date, Sue O'Hearn, Kirk Vanderbilt and Helen Zamboni have read to Avon Primary classes. St. Agnes volunteers are setting up dates to read.

This weekend was to be the exchange student get-together, providing lots of opportunities for Doug and Linda to work and coordinate programs and activities. It sounded like a great weekend and many thanks go to them for their organizing all of this. Culminating the gatherings and a visit to R.I.T. was a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning, cooked by Ernie Wiard.

How about a visit to the Batavia Muck Dogs on September 1? Former Rotarian Shirley Figueroa has proposed a game-with-meal package for us. Please consider this. More to follow.

It was VERY appropriate for Doug Reed to be the 50 / 50 winner -- he is a real winner this week, with both Paul Harris and the $$$!!

We've had a very lovely note of thanks from Dr. Jerry Benjamin, on being selected as a Paul Harris recipient. And a great "Hometown Story" feature in the March 8 Penny Saver focusing on the award and on Dr. Ben. All of Avon should be proud of the work he does for the school and the community.

The Board of Directors will have a brief meeting following the St. Patrick's Day party, to review some budget items.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman

Looking back on...

Tue 3/10 Regular Meeting
Program: no program (CornFest Prep)
Attendance: Absentees were not reported.

President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another AWOL and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.

Looking forward to...
