President's Message

Our meeting of March 3 started off with Bill Gee leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The song team of Tim and Tom -- Dickinson and Ippolito, that is -- led the chorus of "America the Beautiful". Bert Croop offered his thoughtful prayer for our Club and its president (who needs all the prayers she can get).

Somehow Bert Croop's birthday of March 25 was not announced. My apologies, Bert: I don't read the fine print as well as I used to!! Many happy birthday wishes to you, Bert.

Other March birthday people were Ted Coyne, Wayne Warriner and Rob Coyne -- all absent tonight. Apparently no Rotarians chose the month of March for their weddings.

We all appreciated the presentation by Noreen Mazurowski and Tina Faugh, for the Avon Fitness Trail. Our Rotary District Grant helped get this project started. They brought maps and descriptions of each of the "Fitness Stations" and plans for identifying signage at each station. Thanks, too, to Debbie Gage for being with our Club on behalf of the Fitness Trail.

The Fitness Trail aims to promote a healthy lifestyle and to promote interaction between teens and adults in the Avon community. The 1.3 mile trail will include twelve fitness stations and 3 kiosks . Other plans include bathouses (that's bat-houses, not bath-houses) by the Scouts, and a butterfly garden planned by the Garden Club; historical markers and flora and fauna markers. The Village and the Town of Avon have been very supportive and architect Kathleen Ingersoll has contributed her services.

A work day is planned for April 4 -- prepping materials and sites -- and an "installation" day on Saturday, April 25. Volunteers are needed for both dates.

Several Rotarians have responded to the Fitness Trail project at the "Olympic" sponsorship level: the Hayes family, the Cole family, Hurricane Technologies, and Jerry and Kim Dougherty. Other contributions are needed and welcome!!

"Rotary Reads" for the month of March is a District-wide initiative. Your prez is setting up schedules for Club members to read to elementary-level students at both Avon Central and St. Agnes Schools. Please call to volunteer if you can spare an hour to encourage children to read -- it's crucial to develop this habit at early grade levels. Both schools are excited about this volunteer activity. And it is important for our Club members to help in this literacy effort.

Tom Vonglis is the successful bidder for the No Fine button for the month of March.

Celebrations included: Doctor Hayes, celebrating Avon's boys basketball team; and Bob House, celebrating six days with grandson Victor in the Schenectady area.

Helen Zamboni reminds Club members that there are a number of program speakers available. If you are assigned a program date and do not have splendid ideas for a presenter, talk to Helen. One of our future programs will be by a representative of the Attorney General's office in Rochester, on May 19.

Kevin Tompsett reminds us that the District Assembly will be April 4, in Waterloo. And our newest member, Bob French, is the lucky 50 / 50 winner this week.

Jerry Dougherty and Doc Hayes have tickets available still for the Saint Patrick's Party March 14 at the Avon Inn, to benefit Avon Community Cares. Jerry also celebrated the kayakers from the "mountains" achieving notice in Guiness Book of Records.

Our own Club St. Patrick's Day party will be on the very day, March 17, at the Community Center building behind Peppermints. Party Planner Extraordinaire Laurie Vonglis is handling the arrangements. It should be a great evening.

The March meeting of the Board of Directors will be Monday, March 9, 7:00 p.m., conference room of Hurricane Technologies.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman

Koomen's Korner

Warm greetings from former Avon Rotarians and Past Presidents Tim and Marne Rogers, whom yours truly had the pleasure of visiting in their new home in beautiful Asheville, NC.

I'm writing this from our hotel room in the Isle of Palms, SC where I and my beloved are suffering through 80° weather until Wednesday - can't wait to get back to cool Avon!

Looking back on...

Tue 3/3 Regular Meeting
Program: ACE - Fitness Trail, and Kevin T on plans for next year
Attendance: Absentees were not reported.

President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another AWOL and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.

Looking forward to...
