President's Message

We had a wonderful Sweethearts' Day celebration on February 10, perfectly put together by Laurie Vonglis. There's so much to celebrate that it's hard to know where to begin:

District Governor Mike Leone was with us, to present two Paul Harris fellowships, preceded by an excellent background on Rotary, the Paul Harris fellowship award and the Rotary Foundation. The first award, introduced by Jerry Dougherty, was to Dr. Ben of St. Agnes School, who gave us an eloquent discussion of what the Avon community means to him. The next award was to Reverend Bert Croop, who in typically modest fashion told us of the continuity of Rotary membership in his many assignments; his award was introduced by Steve Stephenson.

We were delighted to see so many members of the Perry Rotary Club, starring Past District Governor Eric Parker and his Rotarian-wife Peggy, plus several others, attending to honor Bert for his long-time Rotary membership including time in Perry. Not all of them limited themselves to barside activities.

We were sorry not to have Jim Tompsett with us for the Paul Harris awards; he and Sally are in Florida after her brother's recent death.

An excellent dinner provided by Carney's Catering!! and thanks to Laurie, again, for the special Valentine's touches, the red roses, the special candies and the snacks and wine tasting. After dinner, our Interact club auctioned some wonderful desserts to raise money for their own projects. Thanks to David Coyne, our auctioneer for the night; and to Linda Kime and Doug Reed for working with the Interact-ers. And special thanks to all the Rotarians (and spouses !!!) who bid on the desserts. Our 50 / 50 winner was Don Cook, who donated the winnings to the Interact club.

We've received a postcard from Bill Shaw, who reports that he's "not coming back until we can warm it up in Avon".

This week, District Governor Mike will visit our club for his "official" visit and we'll enjoy having him and hearing his messages. See you all then.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman

Looking back on...
