Issue #24     2009-01-11

President's Message

Shortly after I forward this newletter to Hans for his usual careful review and processing (thanks, Hans), I will be going along to the airport to retrieve our Rotary guests, here in #7120 for the Milt Matthews Hospitality visit, January 9 until January 17.

So, I hope we are all looking forward to being with them on Sunday afternoon, January 11, arrival any time after 2:00 p.m.

We are planning our next Board of Directors meeting for Tuesday evening, January 13, at 7:00 p.m., as our guests will have gone to their next host couple, Paul and Sue Cimicata, East Rochester Club, by that time.

Our meeting January 6 celebrated the January birthday celebrants: Jerry Dougherty, Bob House, mine self, Charles Feller, and Diana Williams, and a wedding anniversary observance by Helen Zamboni. Charles Feller successfully bid for the No Fine button.

An announcement comes from the Cal-Mum Club, of their annual Dinner Dance and Silent Auction, set for Saturday, February 14, at Jones Hall, Caledonia. Prices and details available from their president, Mary Lou Coene, 538 - 6149. This is a great way to support a small club with their projects.

Please add to your club directory information on our newest member, Bob French, which will be sent to you separately via email (slightly more secure than a newsletter webpage). And WELCOME, Bob!! Thanks to Steve Stephenson for recruiting him for our club, and for a fine introduction on Tuesday. It was interesting to observe Bob's gift to Steve as a new member -- some sort of "grinder" tool, apparently. Thanks for recognizing Steve's "special needs", Bob.

We have received official notification of Shirley Figueroa's resignation from the club, for business and personal reasons. Many thanks are due Shirley for her services to the club, as secretary, as photographer, and as willing volunteer at many, many club projects. We will miss her and her generosity.

Thanks, too, to Don Cook for completing the application for Catherine Lloyd as an outgoing exchange student. Catherine is a fine representative from our club and our community. We look forward to hearing more details on her exchange. And we hope we see more of Emiliano, our current exchange student from Rome, at our meetings.

We will not be seeing BIll Shaw, as he departs Saturday for a Florida visit -- safe travels and a good visit, Bill.

Joe Callahan reports that our District is initiating its "Pennies for Polio" project and we'll be receiving information on that. This project will involve Interact Club members. Joe's program for January 6 was a presentation by Lisa Lattime, Livingston County Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse.

It was a big night for falls: several folks fell enroute to the Prayer Service, including Dave Henehan, who now is in the position of having to sue his client, Tom Vonglis, for the icy walkway. Don Cook fell also, requiring some attention from Doctor Hayes for bleeding. Bruce Amey reported falling off the roof while removing decor. You older folks have to be more careful.

Bruce Burritt celebrated his son's upcoming recital at Eastman, January 18. Tom and Laurie Vonglis celebrated their son's engagement. Steve Stephenson admitted to a dangerous house fire which he claims was caused by his wife Carol's negligence.

Big winner of the 50 / 50 was Ben Siragusa. Sorry to have to fine you on that Camels purchase, Ben (not TOO sorry, however).

We received "Merry Christmas" wishes from our DGE visitors last year, Terry and Debbie Daley, from Rockhampton, in Australia. Their long update on Terry's year as District Governor of #9570 began with praises for their welcome here, and their visit to our own club in January.

Kevin Tompsett is already planning for his presidential year; and his ideas and program for the year will be a substantial portion of the Board's meeting on January 13, as well as at the Board's Planning Retreat on January 24.

Once again, thanks to each of you for your efforts and camaraderie during my presidential year. They mean a great deal to me personally, and to our club as a continuing force in the Avon community.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman

Looking back on...

Tue 1/6 Regular Meeting
Program: New Member induction
Attendance: Absentees were not reported.

President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another AWOL and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.

Looking forward to...
