President's Message

Our Avon Rotary Club guests for the Milt Matthews Governor Elect Hospitality Program will be Suresh Chandrasekhar and his wife Madhu, from the city of Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. That state is in the southeast of India, but we do not know anything about their city or club, so far. They will arrive on Friday, January 9, and stay with us until Tuesday afternoon, January 13. Our welcome reception will be at 277 Genesee Street on Sunday, January 11 -- make sure it's on YOUR calendar.

Kevin Tompsett announces his choice for secretary: Bruce Burritt has agreed to serve. We will announce this again Tuesday.

Some news from a former Avon Rotarian: Steve Newvine says "hello" to all of us. For Thanksgiving, he and Vaune went "over to the coast". They've been in California nearly five years. Their older daughter Alison is in SF, and Colleen now lives in Colorado. A brief visit to New York State in November was for Steve to visit his dad, but he hopes to get to visit us sometime in 2009. Steve sends everyone his best wishes.

Our November 26 meeting featured Becky Koomen, Hans and Trisha's daughter home from her 5-month Tanzania experience. She provided an excellent recap with photos of her time with the Jane Goodall Institute including introducing colleagues and students there to recycling, environmental awareness and waste management. Becky is fortunate to have found a Master's degree program at St. Andrew's University which will merge her intellectual goals and her passions. Good work, and good luck! Becky thanked the club for our support of her project.

A reminder from Steve Stephenson on our membership campaign. Let's get working !!!

Jim Tompsett provided an excellent update on Rotary Foundation's polio program: we'll be conducting the "Strive for $5 " drive for each member to contribute $5 in the near future.

A number of celebrations this week: Laurie Vonglis celebrated successful carpal tunnel surgery, a four-day RV trip from Avon to New Orleans to Graceland to a Notre Dame game; a wonderful day distributing dictionaries to all the third-graders in Avon schools and your prez reading "The Quiltmaker's Gift" this morning. Finally, she and Tom celebrated a new grandchild announced to arrive in May. Tom also added a celebration of the Bills game on November 23 and their son Ryan's trip to KC for a game.

Jim Tompsett celebrated "getting out of the geriatric ward": he spent much of today with his mom, age 94, and aunt in the Southern Tier. Shirley Figueroa celebrated a new-to-her PT cruiser, formerly owned by the Tompsetts. Joe Callahan celebrated his daughter's decision to pursue a Master's degree in Education at Nazareth College. Steve Stephenson was delighted with daughter Laurel's new career as an ultrasound technician at Strong Hospital.

Bill Shaw celebrated a new address: 27 Amalfi Drive, Avon. He's very happy with his new home and we all wish him well there. Steve Stephenson was an Auto Club stand-in for Charlie Pease when Charlie ran out of gas. Steve provided a small amount of gas to get Charlie's car started (only one cup of gas, Steve?). Ben Siragusa ran out of gas but no one helped him out. Poor Ben.

We're glad to see Charlie back at the meeting: thanks to Jim Tompsett for transporting him tonight. Tom Ippolito celebrated help from Hans Koomen with his computer, although Tom Vonglis shouted "unfair competition". Tom I. also celebrated his grandson's high honors in school.

Kirk Vanderbilt reminds us the scout troop will be selling Christmas trees. Jim and Julie Carney are coordinating Avon's bell-ringing for the Salvation Army this year. A sign-up sheet was circulated -- let's all pitch in, as always, to help out.

Kelly Cole reviewed recent contributions authorized by the Board of Directors, including: $2000.00 to the Food Pantry, much needed and much appreciated; $500 to student Andy Hedden, as he has provided proofs required; $575 to purchase an EARS unit for an Avon resident (and many more Avon residents in need of these); $204 for the dictionaries distributed today; $1000 each to Teresa House and Avon Community Cares; $2000 for shelter box purchases; $250 to Eagle Scout Kostraba and $100 to Chances and Changes. Each of these organizations and recipients has been most appreciative of our club's donations.

Kirk was the 50/50 winner of $16.00. We are pleased to announce that Kirk is a sharing person and shared his winnings with other Rotarians.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be on Tuesday, December 2, at your prez's home, following the regular meeting.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman

Looking back on...

Tue 11/25 Regular Meeting
Program: Becky Koomen on her Roots & Shoots experience in Tanzania.
Attendance: Absentees were not reported.

President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another AWOL and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.
