Hey, all you Avon Rotarians: we have not seen much activity in bringing prospective members to the club meetings/dinners.
WHY NOT?
Is Bruce Burritt the only Rotarian with a potential new member? Time draws short and our club needs to recruit new folks to help with all the projects we could sponsor.
Remember the suggestion: give a prospective member a copy of "The Rotarian" magazine. It's a great way to familiarize someone with the projects, successes, and goals of Rotary on an international basis.
At our last meeting on November 18, Bill Gee led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by "America the Beautiful" (even if bankrupt) and Bert Croop offered a blessing. "There are Smiles" reminded us of happy faces (even if we're broke),
Welcome!!! to Emiliano, our exchange student from Roma. Thanks to Don Cook for encouraging him to attend.
Diana Williams celebrated a trip to Germany, to see her mother who is in ill health. Mark Evans celebrated his lengthy interview with CNN which was condensed to one-minute. Well, someone found a way to condense Mark's orations.
Kelly Cole celebrated Erin's successful passing of the New York State bar, and the "education cycle now complete" in his household. Hans Koomen celebrated a trip to California in which he was able to squeeze in a 40-mile bike ride in Marin County.
Your president had lots to celebrate, including a conference for bed-and-breakfast owners at the Hotel Thayer, West Point, and finding a Rotary club there for a make-up; glad Laurie Vonglis's carpal tunnel surgery went well; Steve Stephenson for giving us the background on the "speaker stick" from Yusef (for those who don't recall, he received substantial donations from Ben, Jerry and Margo to attend training to become a tour guide in Tanzania), and for mounting the stick on the president's podium. Bill Wall would have received thanks for chairing the meeting that night, if we could find him.
Our Avon Student-of-the-Month for November is 10th-grader Robert Stevens, recognized for his hard work at school. Laurie Vonglis accompanied your president for the recognition on November 18. Next week will find us distributing dictionaries to all the third graders in Avon schools.
A volunteer is needed to participate in the Literacy Project with School #11/33 in Rochester on December 15. This important project by the clubs in our area of District 7120 is again headed by former ADG Richard Nereau.
We are also attempting to find students to participate in both the Oratorical Contest and the Vocal Contest, sponsored each year by the District. If anyone is aware of a potential candidate, please advise Kirk Vanderbilt.
We received a thank-you from Rochester Rotary for supporting and attending the October 29 Eastern Cities Fellowship Dinner. It is always enjoyable to meet the International President and hear his remarks. President D.K. Lee impressed all of us.
The slate of officers for the year 2009 - 2010 was announced, as follows: for President, Kevin Tompsett; for vice-president, Hans Koomen; for Board directors, Kirk Vanderbilt, Laurie Vonglis, and Bob Hayes (thanks greatly, Doc! for agreeing to serve). For treasurer, one Kelly Cole. The office of secretary has not been announced.
Many thanks to Joe Callahan for a most informative program on R.I.'s Polio Plus program, as part of Rotary Foundation month in November. He reported on an excellent brunch at Belhurst Castle highlighting the Foundation. We will try to attend next year's meeting, in lieu of a regular Tuesday meeting. Joe also reported on the isolated resurgence of polio in four nations -- Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan and India -- and the need for the international community to continue to address this health need. Polio is "only a plane ride away" from cropping up again elsewhere, as we have all seen with other epidemics.
Avon was the first 7120 club to submit funds for the " $ 5 each member " drive for Polio Plus, some time ago. How about repeating this sometime soon?
Emiliano was the lucky winner of the 50/50 raffle, $18.00 -- thanks to Don Cook for sharing his raffle tickets with him!!
The successful and smart solver of the riddle posed some weeks ago will be recognized and rewarded as soon as he shows up for a meeting.
See all of you next week, November 25.
Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!
| Tue 11/11 | Regular Meeting |
| Program: | Joe Callahan on R.I.'s Polio Plus |
| Attendance: | Absentees were not reported. President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another AWOL and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District. |
