President's Message

Our meeting of October 21, 2008, saw Doug Reed leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by "America, the Beautiful" and Rev. Bert Croop offering a blessing. Tim Dickinson helped us belt out "Take Me out to the Ball Game". Thanks to all the song leaders and to our intrepid pianist, Gladys Iler.

Bruce Amey celebrated Avon Central School Recognition Week. We hear his test to take over the "Today" Show was not totally successful, and he'll remain here as school superintendent until NBC realizes what they're losing.

Jerry Dougherty celebrated a week of work and accomplishment at the Florida condo. He also confessed to trying to accomplish a make-up at a Rotary Club in Florida but that he and Jim Tompsett were too early -- 24 hours too early -- for the meeting. Nice try, guys. But the Doughertys and the Tompsetts fared well with upgrades by the airlines. Cause to celebrate !!!

Gladys Iler celebrated her 50-year reunion at Eastman School of Music and the spectacular performances by Bruce Burritt's son Michael, adept with both the clarinet and the marimba. Bruce arrived in time to join that celebration.

Special note: a fundraiser was to be held by the Scottsville Club for Gordie Howe, son-in-law of Past Assistant District Governor RIchard Nereau, to cover some of the expenses associated with his illness.

Our program featured Trisha Koomen, wife of our webmaster-genius Hans, and special guest Mike Carroll, of SchoolHouse # 3 Pottery and Art Center in East Avon. Mike recounted some of the accomplishments in restoring the 1853 schoolhouse. His classes and pottery supply company are marking 20 years in business. Trisha is now artist-in-residence there; her slide show highlighted some of the multimedia projects she has worked on. She follows the motto, "Do What you Love, and the Money Will Come." Hmmmm.

Listen up, all you Avon Rotarians: a sudden change in plans. Laurie Vonglis asks to postpone the wine social which had been announced for Saturday, November 15. It seems Laurie prefers to have some surgery !! The wine social will probably take place in February, so save those bottles of wine you were planning to bring and we'll plan for a wintertime party. Good luck with that cut-and-paste on November 14, Laurie.

Thanks to former Avon Rotarians Tim and Marne Rogers, a fine white cap with the Rotary logo was auctioned off. Doug Reed was the successful bidder.

Your Prez is very happy to announce that at least two Rotarians read last week's newsletter. First, earliest, fastest and most correct guesser of the riddle was Dr. Wayne Warriner. Coming in second was Kelly Cole. Apparently, the rest of you Rotarians are not good riddlers. The special prize will be awarded in November.

Our Tuesday meeting this week is replaced by the Eastern Cities Dinner, Wednesday, the 29th, at the Riverside Convention Center. Need or want to share a ride? Give me a call to arrange.

A special note on our auction: don't be shy about volunteering to contact merchants or companies you have not heard announced. This is a total-club project -- not just Mark Evans' project -- and it can be successful only if we all reach out to obtain contributions.

I hope everyone is working on recruiting new members for our club. Steve Stephenson and Bruce Burritt and the Membership Committee have devised a great contest, so, get to work, all!!!

Lucky 50/50 raffle winner was Jerry Dougherty. And our closing song was "Ain't HE Sweet!"

Next regular meeting will be Tuesday, November 4, with vice president Kevin Tompsett presiding. Next Board of Directors meeting will be Monday, November 10, 7:30 p.m. at Hurricane Technologies' conference room.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

President Barbara Herman

Looking back on...

Tue 10/21 Regular Meeting
Program: Trisha Koomen, "Artful Vessels", and Mike Carroll, "Schoolhouse #3 Art Gallery"
Attendance: Absentees were not reported.

President Barbara encourages all who missed a meeting to call another AWOL and do a make-up together. For nearby make-up options, check the back of our paper directory or the on-line directory of District club meeting times and places. If you do a make-up, please tell Secretary Diana about it right away, so the correct numbers are reported to the District.

Looking forward to...
