Our Club meeting of September 16 opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Dr. Bob Hayes and "America the Beautiful" led by Tim Dickinson and our other song leaders, a cappella (or "Acapulco", said Tim). Gladys Iler, we missed your piano to guide us !!
Thank you, Marcia Cameron, for your notes from the September 9 meeting. It's fun to read them !!
Paul and Betty Lou Tilly joined us to remind us of their Lima Club's fundraiser this month. Laurie Vonglis celebrated her new/old car, a Cadillac. Kelly Cole celebrated his mother's 80th birthday party, spending "guy time" with her and his brothers at the Islands, and thanked Sue O'Hearn for a wonderful presentation of snacks at the Chamber of Commerce's September 4 get-together to honor long-time Avon businessman/barber Frank Antinore.
And speaking of guy time, Jim Tompsett celebrated a week of fishing in Canada. We're glad to know the flares set off from your boat achieved results, Jim, or you and the rest of the boys would still be idling on that lake. Joe Callahan apparently did not find much to celebrate from that week, although we heard his was the largest muskie caught. Ernie Wiard refused to celebrate or identify the others on the trip. Thankfully, we heard about Kevin Tompsett's large mouth bass (not his own large mouth) from his dad.
Diana Williams celebrated her dad's week-long visit from Germany. And Jerry Dougherty celebrated a week in the mountains with his family and reminded us of the Breast Cancer 3-day walk taking place this weekend.
An excellent program was presented by Lynn Freshman, of the Pittsford Rotary Club, covering her trip to India in February for a National Immunization Day: a very impressive participation for Polio Plus. How heartening to know of two local Rotarians -- Lynn and Linda Wurtz of the Newark Club -- giving one-on-one service in a remote area to help eradicate polio. The Rotary Dream Team 2008 consisted of 54 members from 7 countries accompanied by an International vice-president from Sweden; they worked with a small village of 500 families and helped refurbish a building, build a clean well water area separate from communal laundry area, and immunize all the children under the age of five. Lynn's husband Manny handled the slide show for us. Many thanks to both of them, for their generous work and for the program.
Reminders: If you have not paid your semi-annual dues by September 30, Kelly Cole will start naming names.
Appreciation Party on September 27 at Doughertys' house: be sure your reservation is in. Bring a dish to pass. Party planner extraordinaire Laurie Vonglis has arranged some special menu items from Julie Carney's Catering.
Eastern Cities Dinner Wednesday, October 29. Laurie circulated a sign-up sheet. Cost to Avon Rotarians is $25.00.
Kirk Vanderbilt is chairing the District 7120 Oratorical Contest this year. Thank you, Kirk.
The membership committee will be announcing a membership drive at our September 30 meeting. Be sure to be there to hear about it.
Lucky winner of the 50/50 drawing this week is Kirk Vanderbilt. He immediately shared his winnings with other worthy club members. Thanks, again, Kirk.
Next meeting: next Tuesday, September 23. Next Board of Directors meeting will be Monday, October 13.
Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!
