What a fine evening we all enjoyed at the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp Sam Wood, on Tuesday, August 19. First-time visitors were impressed with the beautiful setting. For many youngsters with special needs, being away at camp for an entire week is truly Rotary's goal of "Making Dreams Real".
Our Avon Rotarians who give tirelessly to make the camp a success deserve a huge round of applause: Dave Henehan, secretary and counsel for the camp; Ernie Wiard, who has served for years on the camp's Board; and Linda Kime, treasurer of the Camp.
We were also impressed with the newest building on the campsite, a four-compartment lavatory, much needed. Special recognition goes to Margo Harper, whose substantial donation helped to fill that need.
Extra thanks to Ernie for the fine meal he prepared, transported, and served. Ernie, when are you going to start your catering business? The food was delicious. The added treat of ice creams plus cookies arrived thanks to Kim Dougherty.
We heard an update on the camp's season from Camp Director Brian: 22 youngsters with very special needs, a total population of 99 campers, staff members who return year after year because of their dedication to this project.
Enroute back to Avon, we observed a splendid western sky, coral and pink and golds. A beautiful finish to a fine Rotary evening.
Each club in District 7120 is required to send at least one member to the Literacy Seminar. Please, Rotarians, consider attending this activity. You have the choice of two dates to select from: Thursday evening September 18, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at the Pittsford Public Library on State Street in Pittsford; or the following Thursday, September 25, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Dormann Public Library in Bath.
Please let me hear from one of you, to volunteer to attend this seminar!!!
Our next regular meeting is Tuesday, August 26. Our exchange student, Andrew Lloyd, will have a presentation on his year abroad, so please plan to attend to hear and see Andrew's review of his year, before he heads off to college.
Hans Koomen will describe the new e-mail mailing list he's developed, so that we send material to appropriate parties. The Corn Fest wrap-up meeting has been postponed until 9/16, sez Vice President Kevin.
Our next Board meeting will be on Monday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m. at Hurricane Technologies.
Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL"!

Dear Mr. Koomen and the Avon Rotarians,
On behalf of Glenn and myself and Kingdom Ventures, we had a simply marvelous time at the Avon Corn Festival a few weeks ago! As always, the hospitality by the festival committee was tremendous and the receptivity by the people-at-large was so welcoming! We share with everyone -- vendors and non-vendors alike -- what a great family-oriented, enjoyable and relaxing festival event you all provide. Continue the Great Work! We truly love participating in your festival!
Looking forward to seeing you all at the Avon Corn Festival in 2009!
With great appreciation,
Rebecca

AMAZINGLY SIMPLE HOME REMEDIES
Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them while you chop.
For high blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure in your veins. Remember to use a timer.
A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep
after you hit the snooze button.
If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives; then you'll be afraid to cough.
You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.
Remember: Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
