President's Message

So, here we are: Tuesday, August 5: the last meeting before our 22nd Annual Corn Fest.

Steve Stephenson led off our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Our blessing, by Rev. Bert Croop, included some special thoughts and prayers: for Vaune Newvine, wife of former Club Prez Steve Newvine, now of Merced, California, who encountered some post-surgical complications; for Bonnie Taylor-Davis, whose husband Gary died suddenly this morning; and for Gladys Iler's niece under-going surgery.

Recent news from Steve Newvine is: Vaune was permitted to come home from hospital, and is improving, and he thanks all for our prayers.

Our guests tonight are: Cory Collins, outbound exchange student, heading to Italy very soon; and Emmanuele Savona and his fiancee Francesca, in the U.S. for a visit. "Manny" (or "Emma" if you will) was an exchange student living with the Dougherty/House/Tompsett families during the 1997 -98 year. Welcome to all of them!!

Our August birthday boy was Bill Shaw (absent!! no birthday cake for you, Bill). Wedding anniversary celebrants include these couples: Rob Coyne, Bert Croop, Bob House, Jamie Shoemaker, Tom and Laurie Vonglis, and Wayne Warriner.

Margo Harper happily bid $9.00 for the no-fine button for the month of August. What are you going to be doing that's fine-able, Margo? She also gladly celebrated buying a nearby house, to rid the entire area of a troublesome neighbor. That's really "Service Above Self", Margo, improving your neighborhood like that!! Margo volunteered a contribution for having double-booked herself for the Tri-City meeting.

Lots of celebrations tonight: Bruna, our Brazilian exchange student, is back from her 30-day U.S.A. tour, with only one major heartbreak she admits to. Laurie and Tom Vonglis celebrated the 27 years of married bliss they have enjoyed. Jim Tompsett's sister visited from California, and their time together included his great-nephew's games at Cooperstown. Tom Ippolito wants to tell us all about the Heimlich Remover: better do a little more research on that, Tom. Charlie Pease honored Kelly Cole, the chief of the cornhusker crew for the Corn Fest, with a bottle of Corn Huskers lotion. Dr. Bob Hayes enjoyed a memorable ride aboard the carrier U.S. Truman, a very impressive activity. Steve Stephenson is back from a visit to Virginia Beach. Don Cook, Charlie Pease, and several other Rotarians were pitching in with "welcome back, Bruna" notes. Ben Siragusa enjoyed a week at the lake with family including his adorable granddaughter. Helen Zamboni celebrated hosting bicycle riders at her home, and a visit from Massachusetts cousins.

Helen also reminds Rotarians that she has several possible program suggestions: if you are in need of a speaker or presenter, talk to Helen. Also, when you're scheduling a speaker, let Helen or me know in advance, so we can publicize it to the club and encourage visitors to attend and enjoy the presentation.

Tim and Marne Rogers sent along a certificate for services at Avon Physical Therapy. Ted Coyne was the high bidder for that certificate.

The club received a letter of appreciation from ShelterBoxUSA. Our donated shelter box was one of 1800 sent to Myanmar after Cyclone Nargis. The photo we received shows the family in the shelter box and the Rotary logo prominently visible.

Kevin Tompsett did a pre-CornFest wrap-up. He discussed vendor exclusivity for brand-name products, slightly increased space rental prices, and handcrafters being highlighted on Genesee Street. We all celebrated the fine work Hans Koomen has done in organizing and presenting the Corn Fest info, layout, vendor listings and schedules on our www.avonrotary.org website. Traffic to the website is up amazingly during the two weeks prior to the Festival. Thanks to Linda Kime, eight Interact members are signed up to work.

Lucky 50/50 raffle winner was Doc Hayes. Don't let that $22.50 burn a hole in your pocket, Doc!!

We closed with singing "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" and hopes that Saturday, August 9, the sun will shine on our Corn Fest.

The Board of Directors will meet Monday, August 11, 7:00 p.m. at Hurricane Technologies. Next meeting: Tuesday, August 12, 6:00 p.m. at Peppermints. See you all on Saturday!!!

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL".
