President's Message

Avon Rotarians, what a fine evening the "Tri-City" get-together was! We joined with 21 Geneseo and 9 Cal-Mum Rotarians for the "1st Annual Tri-Cities Dinner in its 28th Year, Caledonia Country Club". A cordial Scottsville foursome headed by past ADG Richard Nereau was in attendance also. Emcee Tom Coene of Cal-Mum and Chris Rider of Geneseo, their clubs' presidents, joined me (your president) and past-president Jim Tompsett, and Mary Lou Coene, the new Cal-Mum prez, at the head table, to give a brief description of their clubs' activities and plans.

The lone Livonia Rotarian present, Ralph Parker, became an adopted Avonite that night, and we were all glad to see Ralph joining the evening with us.

The golfers had a great day! Fifth place was a Scottsville group, fourth place a Geneseo group with 3 over par, third place an Avon group with a score of 71, second place a threesome representing three clubs, a score of two under, and the WINNERS!!! the unbeatable Avon foursome of Jim Yencer, Ben Siragusa, Tom Ippolito and Joe Callahan with SEVEN under. Congratulations to all!!

Tom Coene introduced each member of each club present! which was a great way to get to know folks we had not met before. As a departure from past years, we had some "joke" awards. Margaret McCaughey of Geneseo was the "most vertically challenged", at under 5'4". There was quite a contest to name the "Most Follically Challenged", with Avon Rotarians Kevin Tompsett, Jamie Shoemaker and Ted Coyne competing for the certificate. The "Rotarian who traveled the greatest distance in the past year" category also caused some lively discussion, with Jim Tompsett holding out for his Conesus Lake-to-LosAngeles-to PanamaCanal trip, and Dick Thomas winning for his travels. The "Most Traveled in the past year on a Rotary Club Project" unfortunately went un-awarded: Rotarians, this is a call to get in there and do some hands-on Rotary work in other areas!! Jay Ward III of Geneseo was honored for being the first person to hold the office of Club President five times without ever attending PETS training. Corrin Strong was noted for the "Most Mis-Matched Set of Golf Clubs". Our own Ted Coyne has the distinction of being the Rotarian with the longest-time membership: Ted was not sure if it is 53, 54 or 55 years, but someplace in there. And Dr. Bob Hayes has the most grandchildren, with 17. The "Married the longest time and still speaking to the Spouse" award went to Ted Coyne, with 59 years of marriage. Have you been speaking all those 59 years, Ted? You must be tired. The "Newest Married and Still Speaking to the Spouse" award went to newlywed Chris Rider of Geneseo, three-years married, edging out Kevin Tompsett with four years. Kevin did manage to receive the "Youngest Rotarian" award and we are certainly glad for all the work he does for the Corn Fest in Avon. Past President Corrin Strong assessed a fine to our Jim Tompsett, accusing him of stating the Corn Fest started in 1986. Jim maintains he said this was the 22nd year. Jay Ward also copped the award for the longest military service, two years active and 28 years reserve service. A big hand to all the ex-military among us!! And the oldest Rotarian in attendance was Margaret McCaughey, at 88 years!!

The 50/50 raffle winner was Dean Johnston of Geneseo; and the proceeds of the 50/50 raffle were designated for the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp...a great place for our donation of $100.

Next year's host club will be Geneseo, and Avon will host in 2010. Many thanks to both Tom and Mary Lou Coene for arranging the dinner and the evening's program, and to Laurie Vonglis for designing and producing the distinctive "award" certificates.

Mary Lou did announce that Cal-Mum has a supply of Rotary-emblem shirts for sale: they are golf-style shirts, collar, front placket, and Rotary logo, and a great price. Contact her for more info.

That's our story for this week. Remember that growing our membership numbers is a vital goal for us for this year. Membership committee members will be asked to put together a plan to present to the Board.

Hope to see you all on next Tuesday, August 5, at 5:00 at the "warm up" or at 6:00 at Peppermints.

Remember, ROTARY "MAKES DREAMS REAL".

President Barbara Herman
