Our Avon Rotary Club had a good meeting on Tuesday, July 8. Rotarian of the Year Linda Kime led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Reverend Bert Croop gave the blessing, and we saluted our "Grand Old Flag" as a follow-up to the 4th of July.
Our Rotarian-Pianist Gladys Iler had a great selection of pre-dinner songs, as usual.
Past President Bill Wall successfully bid for the No-Fine button last week, but forgot to take it . That cost him an extra dollar.
It appears some Rotarians do not understand the difference between CELEBRATIONS -- events, activities, accomplishments, purchases -- which they wish to share with their Club and contribute to the Club's coffers in acknowledgment of those celebrations; and FINES: that's when your President levies a penalty for some misbehavior or omission. The No-Fine button does not exempt any member from contributing for a celebration. Those are MY rules and I'm sticking with them.
We have a letter from Tom Coene, past-president of the Cal-Mum Club, soliciting ideas for the Tri-City golf outing and get-together on July 28. I'll be meeting with them on July 17 and welcome any input on what to plan for this event, and how to organize it in future years. Please call me with suggestions.
Lots of CELEBRATIONS this week: Linda Kime celebrated her "Rotarian of the Year" Award, and all the club celebrated the great float Linda and the Interact students put together for the July 4th Parade. Tom Vonglis celebrated five days alone with Laurie at their camp. Helen Zamboni celebrated her bike tour from June 14 -- 21 with more than 2,000 other riders. Jim Tompsett celebrated his son-in-law Joe Montesano's coaching accomplishments. Joe Callahan celebrated Vicki's brother's visit with him. Kirk Vanderbilt celebrated his arriving at the meeting at all (late!) and the demise of a '79 Zenith TV. Margo Harper celebrated a visit from her son plus his dogs. Mark Evans celebrated the arrival of the 2008 version of Corn Fest tee shirts and thanks Polly Hayes and her folding team for their neat work. Hans Koomen celebrated his wife Trish's publicity in the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts newsletter. Bob House celebrated the great week with Ginny, first at Vonglis's cabin, then a weekend with the other auction winners with Kelly and Jan Cole.
Sue O'Hearn invites everyone to enjoy this weekend's 1941 Historic Aircraft Group airshow from the comfort of her backyard.
Everyone celebrated winning the tug-of-war at the Downs on Friday evening, after the bicentennial parade. The Rotary team anchored by Mark Evans bested the Lions' team, although the Lions appeared to choose to compete with a short team of only nine members.
Michelle Maginn, recipient of the laptop at St. Agnes School, sent a thank-you to the Club.
Reminder: Helen Zamboni has several possible program presenters. If you need a suggestion for your program assignment, contact Helen.
Your president apologizes to valued Board member Kirk Vanderbilt for omitting him in recognizing the Board members with a "Make Dreams Real" lapel pin. Sorry, Kirk. Must be that pschedelic colored shirt you were wearing which blinded me.
See y'all at the Doughertys' cottage next Tuesday, July 15, for our Conesus Lake picnic. Bring $10 and a dish to pass -- also your beloved (either a spouse or another beloved of your choosing). Next regular Peppermint's meeting: Tuesday, July 22.
The Board of Directors will meet Monday, July 14, at 7:00 p.m. At Hurritech's conference room. As always, members may attend and observe the Board in action -- it's a make-up for a regular meeting if needed.

As you may remember, my daughter Becky made a presentation last November on her desire to volunteer in Tanzania for the Roots & Shoots program of the Jane Goodall Institute, and in particular, to work on raising awareness of the illegal bush meat trade that is devastating the remaining primate populations in Africa. Thanks to donations from many friends, including a significant contribution from the Avon Rotary, Becky was able to realize her dream, and left for Dar-es-Salaam on April 14. She is thrilled to be there, and is making a difference in many lives. Although originally scheduled to return middle of August, she is so busy and engaged that she has pushed back her return to late September.
She has limited access to a slow internet connection, but has been able to send out several dispatches via an email group she created for this purpose. If you're interested in reading about her experiences, check out Becky's dispatch archive. She has also been able to upload a few photos - check out Becky's photo archive.
If you want to join the group so you can receive her dispatches directly, send an empty email message to becky-in-dar-subscribe@googlegroups.com. You'll get a confirmation message from Google - just reply to it with an empty message to confirm. If you'd like to contact her directly, you can either email her or call her at +255-78-364-8408. Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.
